This image was sent along to me with the following note;
.....this is a pic from an 1890's glass negative. Don't know if it is still around. Have you ever run into this before in your travels around the lake?...Bob

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to the identity of this island?

Although the size of the island appears to be the size of Little One Mile, I know that the former shack on that island was not a two story structure and therefore doesn't fit the time frame given. Peter Piper's Two Mile Island fits the size of the structure but the island is too small. Can't place it McDude, I give up.

I tried comparing it to Little Mark Island.....but that wasn't it.

Could this be Little Loon Island just off Vessey Shores in Meredith ? There is still a two story house on that very small island.

Looking at the picture, and the island in the background, I am wondering if it could be the small island next to Locke Island, right out from the docks in Glendale (here is where the mind bit comes in...I grew up summers in Glendale across from Lion's Den.)

Can't remember the name of the little island, that house is not the house on it now, but the background could almost be Welch's Is,

That would be Rock Island, a view of Rock from Locke would have Welch in the background.

That's the name; kinda hard to forget the name, given all the rocks around it...Thanks.

Is it possible that this island and house are not on Winni...but perhaps in the Thousand Islands..St. Lawrence River, down river (NE) from Alexandria Bay? There are a few such islands like this just off todays shipping channel. NB

There's a house and island very similar to this on Big Squam, within 2 miles of the 113/US 3 intersection.

Too far for me to go check it out, but it's easily visible from 113.

gokart-mozart might be right. If you go to Google Maps in satellite view there appears to be a similarly shaped island about 2 miles due east from the intersection and the picture would have been taken from a boat off of Greg Point. I can't zoom close enough to confirm, but its possible.

I went back to the original e-mail from Bob where he was asking about the Lakeshore RR and he had this to say....

I had a collection of 1890's Gilford glass negatives, one of which with those notations.

...that's not to say that the photographer couldn't have meandered over to Squam Lake.

Sure looks like it fits the Rock Island scenario.

I believe it is Rock Island looking north with Round, Camp, and the Forties in the background.

I think the Rock Island theory is missing some key information. Has the negative been reversed to show the actual view or are we in fact looking at the mirror of the actual, because if the latter is correct than the shape of the rock outcroppings on Rock Is do not fit.

I apparently missed the fourth word in the quote of the original post, sorry about that.

There is a line of rocks running westward from Rock Island to Locke some of which are apparent in attached photo taken from the south west. This somewhat agrees with the mystery photo .

The Gilford tax card has a photo of the current two story structure: http://gilford.univers-clt.com/view_property_R.php?account_no=243-029-000&series_card=1

The listed construction date is 1915.

About 10 years the Gilford Island Assoc picnic was on both Locke and Rock. We met the owners of Rock Is who said that the land had been slowly built out over many decades and the retaining wall installed. Every visitor to the island had to bring a bucket of soil or gravel.

I dunno... Here's some pics:

....BIZER.... (http://www.bizer.com/winislan.htm) lists at least three Rock Islands

Yeah - I saw that... I'd meant to post more but two major forces kept me from getting it done... (my two boys!) :)

A little research on that Rock Island house...

Traced it as far back as 1916 but there was no record of the size of the building. It was bought/sold in 1916, 1920, 1926, 1936, 1966, and the current owners bought it in 1992. I suspect it pre-dates 1916 but wasn't able to go much further with the deeds tonight than that.

That little house on the little island is very interesting! :)

That's definately not the Rock Island shown in AW's photo.About that postcard...the author writes "Don't expect me home for a month or so,I think I shall go to the White Mts or Lowell?Just slight difference between those two :laugh:destinations huh?
