Post labor day quest.

I may have 9 days off beginning Sept 4 and it's up in the air as to what to do and where to go. I've never been to the lake post Labor Day.
How quickly do they pull the sidewalks in post Labor day? The lake should really be nice just me and the MP. Bet I get stopped for lack of better things to do:laugh:

The museums in Wolfeboro (Boat) and (Wright WWII home life and military- the one with the tank in its facade) are open into October. Not sure about the Libby natural history museum on the Wolfe-Tufton line.

That should fill up one day. The retailers are still open downtown.

We are here a lot when the lake is quiet and it's just us and the MP for miles. I used to think the same thing you are saying but over the years I can say I have never been stopped despite hundreds of passings. Quick, knock on wood.

September is a great month to be at the lake. Yes, some places are closed and the number of folks around is much reduced, but it is far from a ghost town and the wait for tables at popular restaurants that remain open is close to zero!

As long as the lake stays above 503', boating is great as well. I have issues around my dock below 503'.

We come up to the lake and rent a cabin for the last two weeks (+/-) of September on the Wolfeboro side ...going on 14 years now. Everything is pretty quiet....and pleasant. Never had an issue with the MP. FWIW: We have a Donzi..and I'm an Old Coot. Weather is usually great during that period for the most part.

The Wolfeboro Inn ...where we used to go a couple of times during our two weeks ....had become dissapointing...last few years, this BEFORE the NEW owners this year. We just figured that the college age wait persons had gone back to school. We haven't been there for at least of couple of years.

When you are on vacation ..you don't need any disappointments. Results may vary. :D NB

This is by far the nicest time of the year for many of us, especially year rounders. The boating is the best since the water is very warm and the lake is so peaceful. Post Labor Day September is also the greatest because the roads, restaurants, and interesting places are not so jammed, especially on weekdays. Retail businesses hate this period since it is so dead - the huge lull between Summer madness and Fall leaf peepers.

My vacation is the week of Labor Day 9/8-9/11 plus the weekends.

This is a really nice time, weekends are still crowded but less so. Weekdays are dead. Some of the real tourist restaurants close, but most are open until Columbus day. Some are open weekends only.

Best of all the water is still warm. Plus I can usually get a dock! I haven't been able to dock in Center Harbor for three season. Going to make it this year. But then have to decide on where to eat there...

One last thing, plan your fuel stops, some places close a weekday or two. And most close at 5PM even on weekends.

If you're interested in the history of the Lake area, I recommend the roadside motel exhibit at the Laconia Public Library. I saw it last week and I enjoyed it very much. It runs thru the end of October, I think.

Starting the week after labor day the seasonal properties begin closing down. My father has been doing this close down process for a soft drink company in the lakes region territory going on his twenty ninth year, it is mostly the smaller seasonal attractions, i.e. mini golf, water slides, go karts, really small dining that start first. But remember he is only one man and does this alone so you should be in good shape, I can't speak for those that serve a red canned soda only blue.

Is the best time to go boating. Minimum exposure to Cap'n Boneheads, the air is crisp. No 'fighting' for public dock spaces. Most commercial places are still open. Even the beach bars! :cheers:

my family and I vacationed at Spindle Point for 30 years. My parents retired in the late 60"s and began to stay at our cabin late into the fall.We got so spoiled by the lack of traffic, both on the water and the roads, that it became our favorite time of year there. The lake is still warm and you begin to feel like you own it. I don,t know if you like fresh corn on the cob but it just begins to come in up there around Labor Day. My advice, go for it!

Are you still employed by Ma Bell? I have found over the past 15+ years that Labor Day week is one of the nicest to spend at the lake. It seems that by Monday at noon someone pulls a plug and the place empties out. Sandy Point gets very quiet and nice -- the beach is quiet for sunning, reading, etc. Sandy Point restaurant is now serving dinner only, and I believe after next week will be open Fri. night thru Sunday till Columbus Day weekend. As far as other restaurants, the William Tell, Patrick's Pub, Ellacoya Barn & Grille, and the Lyon's Den are year-round. So is Johnson's in New Durham (where Dot's Lunch used to be).

If you're bringing the boat, you just have to make sure to find out which marinas close during the week in Sept. if you need fuel. Our boat will be in the water till the last week in Sept.

This year I'll be spending Labor Day week + the week of 9/20 at the lake. Sure beats NJ! My AT&T brother (gtxrider) will be up from NJ the week of 9/27.

Nah, took an early out package from AT&T in Feb. 05. Goofed off for two years and was then offered a job in an endodontic office (root canals):eek:
I'm schedule coordinator and chief of maintainance. Quite a change from the phone factory. Since it is a small office I have to schedule my vacation along with the doctors since my wife is office mgr and they can't do without the both of us at the same time and function too.
Unfortunately , the dr. was going to Fla. labor day week but changed her mind because she thought it may still be too hot. Next target date is first or second week of Oct. My plan "B" is now fly to San Fran. for a few days then drive to Las Vegas for a few more and catch a few shows then fly back to Jersey.
Thanks people for the good post Labor day advice but it was a false alarm.

The Wolfetrap in Backbay Wolfeboro will be open thru September....they usually close on Labor Day Weekend but Barbara decided to keep it open through the end of the month! They are hosting events for the Vintage Boat Regetta and hopeuflly will be very busy during that time.

I've been up to the lake every month of the year and it's always a good place to be. I was there last year in early September and the weather was perfect, I swam in the lake, enjoyed the sun and didn't have the big crowds in the restaurants. Enjoy !!!

As the true boaters know, September is when the boating season resumes, having started in April and taken a vacation during July and August. Gone are the maddening crowds and slips are available at high noon. It's warm in the sun and cool at night, good for campfires and sleeping. Dashes about the lake in the early AM or latter afternoon will get you warm sun on your face cooled by chilled air off the lake. The sheet cleaved from the surface as the hull cuts the water falls crisply and evenly back letting your ears know that fall has arrived and weekday boating can now be had on the weekends too.

Coming home from the Hopkinton Fair we stumbled upon Tarbin Gardens on Rt. 127 in Franklin. I can't believe we didn't know about this place! It's an English Garden that is open to the public. They also have some interesting livestock (fun for the kids) and best of all, offer an English Cream Tea (tea, scones and clotted cream, pastries, cakes). It's run by a very nice Englishwoman and her son. We had a great time! They are open through Columbus Day. I highly recommend it for a quiet, relaxing outing. http://www.tarbingardens.com

The place we have gone to in Alton about a hundred times now is the Alton Bay diner across from the mini golf. We love the breakfast and home made toast. Always about $18 for the two of us. Great people, and food. Always good. Real good. Easy walk from the town dock.

I agree about the Alton Bay Diner. It is our favorite breakfast place, bar none. The homemade cinnamin (can't spell this one to save my life) is beyond unbelievable. For that alone, it is worth the trip!

September is one of the best times of the year at the Lake. You can take everything a little slower. Traffic is down both boat and auto. There are plenty of restaurants open to choose from and no wait. The water is still warm enough to use. Late Sept. the leaves start to change. Cool nights if you like a fire in the fireplace. Just a great time to relax and enjoy the sights. I have found Columbus Day to be the real closing down of many of the smaller restaurants and mom and pop motels.

Let's start with glad first. After the rainy wet summer, the weather is finally better, the lake is less crowded now, everything is less crowded for that matter. September is a great month to go boating still. Some of the best weather has been in September and October the last few years. I remember a few years back, we had 70's temps in November, and 60's in December! I was still walking around in shorts and sandals in the middle of November. It was great.
The sad, seeing all the camps on the lake getting closed up is kinda sad, cause we know that means the summer fun is over. The boating, barbeque, swimming days are numbered. I cook out year round and boat into october, but it just seems the summer went by too fast. I need a winter sport this year. I'm too broke to buy a snowmobile, so I'll probably get some ice skates or something.

Thanks for the advice RG, but Crazy Gringo is already a favorite. Tried Kitchen Cravings a couple times, also very good.

I should put this in the restaurant section but since you asked:

Went to Pop's on Sunday, good as usual. My wife commented that the haddock nuggets was just a tad dry. The one I stole tasted fine.

Went to Shipley's on a sunny day in July. Food was great, we had sandwiches and roll-ups. Sat on the porch, view was great. Service was very slow, no issues it just took a long time to get our order.

Went to JP China at least twice. Always good, consistent and fast. You get old-fashioned American-Chinese food. Not a light place to eat, don't go if you're on a diet.

We like to boat through October and end the season with the Mt Washington Halloween Costume and dinner cruise. We boat to the Weirs and board for the fun.

I suggest Avery's in Laconia for evening dinner and socializing with the regulars.....
