Need some input - we're staying at cottage off Moultonboro Neck and want to play golf. What golf course would you recommend we try?

Ridgewood in Moultonboro, Indian Mound in Ossipee, Waukeewan in Merideth.

Ridgewood is a lot of target golf, with hazards and wetlands, but is well marked for distances to or over the problems. Indian Mound is a nice course, not too much trouble on it, and Waukeewan is a nice family owned course with a challenge.

Since you started it, how about Friday/Saturday this coming weekend in Laconia general region. Depends on whether these tropical storms move far enough offshore so as not to damage the NH weather.

We'll be staying at the Naswa, but I know the area very well. The last course I played in the LR was Waukewan many years ago.

I would have to say Phesant Ridge is a great golf course, not too difficult, perfect for vacation golf and great views!

also Lochmere is always a good bet

Phesant ridge is first exit comign back on the bypass from where the Walmart in Gilford is, really close

If you are looking for a nice place, Lochmere is a bit pricey, but very good, and always in top notch condition. They run decent mid-week specials.
In Meredith, for any beginner, or someone on a tight buget, Oak Hills is a cheap 9 hole course ($14, walk) and actaully a fun place to play, and perfect for someone starting out.

Never heard of Lochmere, but I never golfed much when I was at Winni anyway. Played Laconia years ago.

This is my favorite in the Lakes Region no more than 20 minuets from Naswa.

They have a great deal after 3 in the afternoon. ( $20 bucks unlimited.. cart seperate) Great course, not too hard and the views from the course is spectacular.

I agree with SteveA about Pheasant Ridge. Nice lay out, great views, and priced reasonably.
Probably a 20 minute ride from the Naswa, perhaps even shorter, with no traffic.
Lochmere is more of "formal" golf course. A touch stuffy, but great course, and nice dining room.

I play Ladies Day Wednesday at Pheasant Ridge and the course is in horrible shape. The greens are very bumpy. The fairways are so under water you have to pick up your ball and move it out, if you can walk to it without sinking up to your ankles. Lochmere is a wonderful course. Very lush, the greens are extremely readable and true, and if you watch coupons in the Laker and Weirs Times, can get a very good deal. Vic, the pro is very nice. As is the starter. I would highly recommend this course over any other in the area.

But could you gander a guess as to how the fairways at Pheasant Ridge could be underwater? Their greens sound a bit less wonderful than "extremely readable and true". Perhaps you're a dedicated and loyal member of Lochmere?

This is a little overstated. But accurate to a point. They did lose 2 greens over the past winter. They are almost all the way back now.

The course is hilly.. and like all local courses the hilly parts are slow to drain after heavy rain. But no parts are "underwater" and the greens aren't "bumpy"

I run an annual tournament at PR, (8/1/09) and play there often. They were in tough condition in mid July, but it was great for our event and great last weekend.

On the other side.. I don't agree at all that Vic at Lochmere is a nice guy. I had a gift certificate given to me to play at Lochmere. When I tried to use it, Mr. Nice Guy Vic told me it was "Out of Date" . I pointed out that in NH, the law forbids an expiration date on Gift Certificates. His response.. " Too bad.. that's my rule" .

In fairness, I've talked to a number of people that also consider him a nice guy... so maybe I just caught him on a bad day.

So..callawassiegirl... next time you go to Lochmere... tell him about this.. I still have the certificate.. maybe he'll change his mind? :)

I played Pheasant Ridge on 7/16 and 7/17 and, although it was less than perfect, found it to be perfectly acceptable.
I would agree with the comment that was made that Lochmere is the premier, open to the public, golf course in the area. Always perfect, but $$$$ on Friday thru Sunday.
The best course I have ever played in the lakes region was Lake Winnipesaukee Country Club, which is fully private...very exclusive.
As guests of the dining room manager, we were able to play after 3 (as long as no members requested a time within a half hour of when we went off), and, after playing, were not permitted to enter the dining room or bar for a drink (strictly members only).
Very stuffy people...but what unreal service, and what a course. Truly a once in a life time type thing.

As for the foursome of Steves...with me, it would be more like "Oh, Steve, your ball is over here in the woods" or "Steve, here's your balll in the trap" or "Steve, just drop one. we are not going to find it".

Pheasant Ridge is my 'home' course when I am in the LR.

I agree that a few of the greens are in tough shape, but the layout and views make up for anything it lacks in maintenance or upkeep.
