Those eager for the 23rd annual Summer Festival of the Taxiarchai Greek Orthodox Church coming up on Saturday did not imagine the smell of fresh-baked baklava wafting from the church's basement kitchen a few days ago.
A group of dedicated and culinarily-gifted church members were busy baking batches and batches of the sweet, nutty, honey-glazed pastry on Saturday in preparation for the Festival, of which food is a main ingredient.
Mary Garside, a church member, said she has always helped prepare food for the festival.
She was among 10 to 12 others who got up early on Saturday and spent the morning baking baklava.
