Heath`s Annual Lobster Sale

If anybody is interested Heath`s Supermarket is having their annual one ton lobster sale tomorrow morning ,outside right off the truck straight from Booth Bay Harbor, Me. I haven`t heard the price yet but it is ussually the lowest price around. Sounds like a good day for a lobsta & clam bake!

It's that secret Center Harbor supermarket that has just one very low key sign, 'E M Heath' in old style, gold lettering above the entrance.

Signs.....a supermarket don't need no signs....everybody automatically knows about Heath's by osmosis....take a deep breath....and follow your instincts. If you were to guess where a supermarket could be located...where would you suspect?


Does Hannaford's in Meredith use any signs? .....duh? Hey.....in the retail supermarket biz....a sign is really just not needed and is a sign of a poor business model.

Does the Meredith Village Savings, or Lowe's, or McDonald's, or Wal-Mart use any signs? Hey, if you want to go signless, you can either go to Vermont.....or locally....go to Center Harbor. Methinks...the Heath supermarket sign policy is probably part of their lease....but that's just a guess?

I work for Heath`s and they would love to have a large sign by the front near route 25. However there are several items that are making that impossible at this time. First the land between the building and route 25 is owned part by the state and part by the town. Second the shopping center is a condo association owned by several different people. The owners in the association would need to agree to the sign, (E.M. Heath is a tenant not owner). That seems to be an issue. A sign would benefit all the owners but they don`t seem to want to deal with the issue. Samiam may know more on this subject from his connection there. I for one think that a sign should be a priority in the near future at "Senter Market" (name of shopping center).

Here's a thought....do what Meredith McDonald's used to do and what White Mountain Auto in Ashland does along side Rt 93 for a fairly attactive sign for where a standard sign is not allowed.

Place some nice attractive signs onto an old box van, and "temporarily" park the van in the parking lot, in a parking space near the road for best visiibility.

Do the sign rules apply to a parked vehicle? Seems like an easy-to-do and not too expensive chess move and could get some neighborly attention?

Picture a sign for the 'Truckload Lobster Sale'.....with a great big red lobster....on both sides of an all-white 1989 Ford box van.... as seen from Rt 25. Do good signs attract and strengthen business? Do people buy with their eyes?

Actually,Heaths is one of the owners,not in that name but in the name of a parent corp. I agree,Gus62,I would love to see them get a nice big sign on rt 25.I believe the issue is with the town or state because all of us in the condo association would gladly approve a sign.
Heaths is a treasure...a major employer,taxpayer and a store that deserves all of our support and I hope,some day, they can overcome the obstacles and make it happen.

Just to clarify that as I said before E.M. Heath, Inc is a tenant not an owner. One of the owners of Heaths has his own individual LLC and that LLC is an owner in Senter Market Condo Association. His LLC is his own and is not a parent corporation of E.M. Heath, Inc. But you are right the state or town may be the hurdle that needs to be cleared to get a large display sign for all the businesses in that center.

I made it down to the one ton lobster sale. Quite an event. It started at 9 AM and the third guy in line said he got there at 6:05 AM. I got there at 9 AM and was in line for 2 hours (1 hour in the lobster line, 1 hour in the steamer and pay line). If I remember correctly, in-the-store lobster was $6.29 a pound and the truck had them at $4.99. In-the-store steamer prices were $4.99 per pound and the truck had them at $3.29. So, I figure I saved about $16. Is $16 worth standing in line for 2 hours? Not so sure... but I did get to meet and talk to some nice folks that I wouldn't have otherwise.

Market Basket in Concord and Tilton had lobsters for $4.99 a pound. No waiting! I'm glad I took advantage of this sale than wait 2 hours in line. :D

Actually the price for lobsters was $4.29 lb off the truck and $6.49 lb inside the store. It was very busy but lots of fun. The people in line were great. I hope everyone enjoyed their Lobsta & clam bakes. Some people got up to 70 lobsters for their annnual community party. Not to mention the lobster races the kids had.
