How about Boat Names?

We recently found out that we are finally going to be grandparents.. :D:D
When our son and daughter-in-law gave us the big news on Mothers Day, they showed us the first sonograms. We all agreed it looked like one of those Sea Monkeys that you that you could grow in a test tube.:laugh:
How did you name your boat?

Congratulations on the good news!
We had a Sunfish that we called the Yard Sail. Of course, we bought it at a yard sale years ago.

Finally named this season
I am on my fourth small fishing boat, starting with a twelve footer 30 years ago, and then 3 14's. Each boat has had the same name (adding I,II,II,IV). I never painted the name on the boat ... it just existed in my mind. The name? ... "Free At Last"! :)

My truck vanity plate is PCONE and my boat was named PCONE TOO.
My father had an older inboard with the name SURPRISE (I guess related to his amazement each time it started).

No name for our pontoon boat…but feeling like we should name it. We always did refer to ourselves as the “Clampetts”, so perhaps one day that name will go on!
Ok, so let’s just say that “my” boat (20ft SeaRay) is community owned….by my two other sisters (and our husbands). She is fondly referred to as “Ka-Ching”. Picture the sound of a cash register! For a while there, it was, hey you owe this much for winterization or for a chopped up prop or for whatever. But after all these years, she is getting older now, but we got many years out of her and hopefully many more to come. Cannot complain!
Long Live Ka-Ching!.....cause I cannot afford a new one!:D:D

We named our 21' Cobalt for our lovable Bernese Mountain Dog. Her full name is DeGrasso's China Belle V Legacy. We just call her Belle, but thought China Belle sounded nice for the boat. Although she has the boat named for her, she does not like to go out on it. It's a long summer. Hopefully she'll learn to like it

I don't know about your tax return, but excluding the child credits, most of which had already been there, the rest of the cut wasn't that much. More like a radio-controlled boat kinda thing :D Just think of the tremendous revenue created by those tax cuts. (I kept every last dime and nickel of mine)
I like the fact that they print money all the time now. It means they don't need mine at all :rolleye2:

We have had several boats, My grandfathers was a 26' homemade lakelaunch called the "BobbieB" named after my father who christened it. My dad built a 11' boat and I christened it in 1957 named "PUDDY-TAT" it had many appearances that my brother and I took it away from my father, but not really. Dad bought a boat made by Kingfisher, he named it TAT's PAW.
I bought a 15' Bonita tri hull and it was Puddy Tat II, but to reverse in the winter of 1958 my dad built me a boat, a six foot boat and it was named Twetty" I now have a 16'5" SeaSprite called "Tats It" and then there is the Pontoon boat "No Problem" Bought when my dad retired.
Names on boats are fun to look for. :rolleye2:

We owned a home and a slip on Lake Winni since 1992, but didn't buy a boat until 2008. Why? Whenever one of our neighbors asked us why we didn't have a boat we explained that it wasn't in our budget because of our tuition obligations.
So. when we finally took the leap of faith and puchased our watercraft last year we debated what to name our treasure. We settled on:

The latest boat was named in memory of my Dad. As kids he'd joke with us when travelling that he was taking a "circuitous route" to wherever. We used to laugh and joke about his big "50 cent" (as we called them) words. Now, in his memory and it always brings a smile to my face, it's on the stern ......"Circuitous" . :D

Naming our boat has turned into one of those life obsessions that burned up way more mental energy than the task deserves. As a result, we have gone 9 years without a name. Probably partially due to this thread, yesterday we were finally ready to name the boat who would be entering 4th grade if a child.

My wife and I would take trips to the lake and drive the auto road. We were thrilled every time we saw the lake through the trees and saw boaters enjoying themselves. We never spent much money on recreation to that point in our lives but decided to splurge.
While we were waiting for our new boat we kept asking each other if there were any regrets. The answer was always “No Regrets”. So that became the name. After 3 months we loved it so much we “upgraded”. The new boat name was modified by adding 2 lines through the last S making it look like a dollar sign.

BUST n OUT
10-14-2010, 11:50 AM
When we first came to Winni nearly thirty years ago, my two brothers and I bought our third boat together. We also had had nine children under the age of five at the time.
At some point in the day when we were worn down by the kids activities (as much as we love them) we would say to each other " lets BUST OUT of here and inevitably take off in our un named boat for a break. After three years of this and unable to agree on a boat name we realised every time we escaped we would say we're "BUST n OUT" of here, we had the the appropriate name all along.
By the way to further explain this, 8 out of the 9 children are our beautiful DAUGHTERS !!!! and we're still BUST n OUT!

Hey Broadhopper...I remember seeing that boat on a trailer @ the Weirs way back when...I grew up in Alton Bay and always had ski boats...If you lived in Paugus Bay & your last name begins with a G, you know the Harkins brothers and you took us for a ride in that Basty Nastard...long story short...I ended up buying a "basket case" Tahiti 22 w/a 460 Holman/Moody w/a jet after that ride & brought it back to life...The name of that yellow/orange/red bad boy was "Razin Caine"...At that time I was @ Pier 3 and all over the lake & Paugus Bay...It was a SWEET lookin boat & is still alive today in Mass.....

If you believe in that superstition, there is also an official renaming ceremony you can do to release the old name and re-christen it.

Not if it's changed due to new ownership (no pun intended). It needs to be done promptly or the superstition will apply. As to the rituals for renaming... It's just an excuse to imbibe if you're so inclined.

Can I ask what must be a very dum question? Like, why is the 'Original Contract' a small r-i-b, while the 'Change Order' is a much bigger and more expensive boat?
For example, let's say you do some remodel work, roof-windows-insulation, on an old waterfront cottage and the original construction contract is $25,000. Ok, then during the construction process, you see it building out and you think of a better design so's you get a better waterfront view or something, and the change order costs you an extra $1500. So's $25,000 is way more than $1500, so how's the logic behind naming the big boat 'Change Order' and the little r-i-b 'Original Contract.' In the real world of construction, it's just a contracter's myth....probably some story they like to repeat while having a beer or two or three...

Well, in this day and age of commercial construction, many times original contract proposals are based off extremely tight margins with little or no profit with the hope of simply being awarded the job to keep your men working.
Change orders represent a change from the original contract scope of work and many times are adds by the owner of the project. Since the sub contractor is not bidding against anyone for a change order, markups are higher allowing the sub to make a profit. In many instances and especially in today's market, profit from change orders can be what a sub relies on to make a job profitable at least in commercial construction.

thinking:
