So as I have looked at watch the DES site in regards to lake levels etc. It seems as though the dam is being opperated out the outlet of Winnipesaukee differently this year. There seems to be a more conservative response to the rising water level. Not that I am agianst this mind you as I have though in years past that there has been to much knee jerk with response at the dam.... which cause the lake to low to quickly in my opinion. But I am now left wondering is there someone new in charge of the watershed and the dam release? Or is this a new tactic being tried..........

I sure hope they take a different approach from last year in lowering the lake level in the fall. The Weirs channel was like whitewater rapids! We slip at Thurston's and there were times we simply did not go out due to the "challenge" of docking in that current.

First time I saw the title, I thought you were going to write about DAM, which now often referes to Digital Asset Management!

...now, you can go paddle the outflow...hey there kayakers and canoers....holy cowabunga!....thanks to the City of Laconia for building the new Winnipesaukee River canoe & kayak carry launch, you can now paddle the Lake Winnipesaukee outflow by driving Route 106, the Parade Rd, into Laconia and then find an easy parking spot close to Laconia city hall and the public garden-village green between the old Belknap Mill building and the river. This new canoe and kayak launch is right there, close to a parking spot on the street, plus the river is good for fishing either salmon or bass, depending on the water temperature.

Yesterday, the outflow made it a class 1 1/2 river with a steady moving current but no white water.

It runs about 1000 yards down the flowing river to get to Lake Winnisquam and as it approaches the no-fee, State of New Hampshire motorboat launch facility for Lake Winnisquam the Winnipesaukee River gets much deeper and slows down to a crawl.

The Winnipesaukee River kayak launch is about 50 yards down stream from the Avery Dam, which backs up Lake Opechee to the Lakeport Dam, which then dams up large Lake Winnipesaukee, and is close to the Laconia fire station in Lakeport.

The kayak launch was placed on an inside curve area of the river which has a shallow sandy bottom there that helps very much for getting in & out of a kayak or canoe. It has a very nice, City of Laconia sign that says "canoe & kayak launch."

For experienced kayakers and canoe paddlers, the moving water directly below the 10' high Avery Dam looks like a good place to practice paddling in some moderately moving water, depending upon the amount of outflow.

As the saying goes....it's all just water over the dam....whatever that means...(?)
.......

Harley Davidson will soon be setting up their large H-D road tour in the parking lot next to city hall for Bike Week.
