I think I know the answer to this question, but I don't know if everyone else does.

Does the number of views on a thread indicate how many different people have actually looked at the thread? Or is it how many times the thread has been looked at? For example, if I look at the same thread five times, with that result in five views?

My guess is a person's view counts only once. If they log in from a different IP address, would it show as two views? So this would mean that 10,016 (current count) different people have looked at the Suspicious Death in Wolfeboro thread. Non members are counted in the views.

Thanks!

Can I make a guess too? :)

A table keeping track of all the ips over all the threads would be really long and intensive to search thru. So, its probably not that. This means that visitors get counted on each view, since many are/can be behind proxies, presenting the same IP. So, this leaves users logged in. The software already knows if you viewed it, and its not that big of a lookup.

So, my guess is visitors are counted every view, and users are counted only once.

Maybe we can bet scorpion bowls?

OK, I was logged in and read this thread but I hadn't previously noted the view count. I closed the thread and repeatedly read it, refresshing the screen between each read. The count stayed steady at 33. I logged off and repeated the same. Still the count remained at 33. Then I went away for a few hours and came back, new window, and re-logged in. The count was 66. I opened and read the thread, closed it and refreshed. Count stayed at 66. It seems to be like a poll, you only get counted once. Perhaps coming in from another IP addy might make a difference. I'll try later tonight.
