There are a couple of rainbows to the the south, caught this one on the Weirs CamThat primary rainbow was quite spectacular ... one of the brightest ones we've seen. Here's a shot of it taken from our place near Minge Cove looking toward Wolfeboro. The rainbow seems to come down right next to Ship Island. A secondary rainbow can be seen at the left side of the shot.

DRH,

We saw those from Rattlesnake as well, they were so bright and amazing. Great picture, we forgot our camera and were scrambling to get the cell phones. We did get one picture, but not a good as yours.

DRH, were both of those rainbows visible to the eye before you took the pic, or did you only notice the second one after you saw the picture?

Pretty cool that Bear Island South and the Webmaster caught the rainbow on the webcam!

DRH, what a beautiful picture! Despite the difference in our locals, the views are pretty similar.

I was so happy that I had remembered the camera this weekend!
Unfortunately R-Guy's Photoshop was on the fritz and we couldn't share them right away.

A double delight for sure!

The pot of gold disappeared before we could get to it.

The lighting became quite interesting as the rainbow faded.

I learned that turning a camera that has a polarizing lens on it will make a rainbow disappear if you do not adjust the filter.

That's is pretty cool stuff!

RG...great pics. You couldn't find the pot of gold because if you look in the close up picture, it would appear that you would have had to look at the lake floor to find it.

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Winnipesaukee Forum.

Unlike lightening, I guess rainbows do strike at the same place, over and over again. Here are the two snapshots, one year apart -- stiking the same place, at exactly the same time of the day (well, within 2 seconds that is).

That is amazing and almost unbelievable! Thanks for putting the two pics side by side.

That the rainbows appear in exactly the same spot relative to the camera is a function of the fact that they happened on very similar dates and times, only 1 year apart. Since they did happen so nearly on the same day of the year and same time, the sun would be in nearly exactly the same spot as the clouds to the west, behind the camera position, parted. Then, since the camera position was the same as well, given a curtain of water droplets located within the camera's field of view, all the geometry would line up just as it did last year, which would place this year's rainbow in the same spot. Amazing but true, both rainbows appear to touch the horizon in the same location, though maybe the 2009 rainbow comes down a bit in front of the island rather than appearing to drop behind it. This probably means that there were a bit more water droplets still in the air right over Weirs Bay than was the case for the more recent rainbow this weekend.

It's kind of like the special lighting effects that happen but once a year at ancient calendar, sun-dial/obelisk places like Stonehenge. Very cool, all in all.
