Does anyone know a good marine mechanic that will do the work in water. I think I need a water pump overhauled. I am trying to save money on not just a tow but I don't have a trailer so I get hit for land towing charges too.

Sorry, I don't but if you have SeaTow or TowBoatUS you have coverage to be towed to a marina for that purpose.

If you have other coverage, you should check your policy.

Good luck!

Is that like when you do an oil change on a four-stroke outoard while the boat is still in the water?

Suggest you look at craigslist NH boats for a local, shade tree mechanic. They are definately out there.

I recommend Matt Resca of Supreme marine 603-630-0946. He has repaired two boats for me, very reasonable.

Hope your in-water mechanic has a clamp for the inlet hose on your pump (or the inlet is fitted with a seacock). You gotta pinch the hose (or shut off the seacock) or there will be a tremendous flow of water when he/she disconnects the pump.

OP: need some info on your boat...

make:
model:
engine:
year:

if it has a volvo penta drive train or mercruiser belt pump (raw water on big blocks) then it can be done "in-water"

if it is an OMC or mercruiser with an alpha drive, then it HAS to be done "out-of-water"

LIforrelaxin: Goodhue Marine is no longer at Harilla Landing Yacht Club on the end of Long Island. new company Complete Marine Care www.completemarinecare.com 253-4592 651-9727

You're right I found out I had to pull it since it is a Merc Alpha. Thank God I found a nice neighbor who had their boat in the water for a tow. It only cost be a $50 dinner instead of $350 through TowBoat and land tow.

Any idea why he left teaching after about 14 years at the highly regarded marine technician school at the NHCTC, now renamed the LRCC, Lakes Region Community College, and formerly the New Hampshire Vocatioal Technical School, or something? Did it have anything to do with Mercury outboards and MerCruiser outdrives having to cut back on their sponsorship-partnership at the school owing to the deep sinking of boat sales?

Dave R's reasons for leaving NHTC were personal. His qualifications are the best and unquestioned. Top notch. He does do house calls and has a facility at his home on RT 109. He keeps up my wifes 68 Century.

Lance Packard is also a good choice. Very honest and fair.

Since you have a Merc Alpha I expect that it is your water pickup impeller which is located in the outdrive just above the lower unit. Yup, you had to pull the boat.

Good luck and see ya out there!

Misty Blue.

I did pull the boat and it was the impeller. I put it back in the water and still had overheating. Make sure you check the thermostat as well. It was toast so had to replace that as well. Everything running fine now.
