New Meredith dock idea

I know there are a lot of docks at Meredith already, though often not enough. While driving by the new Hannafords it occurred to me that there's a lot of unused shoreline almost across the street from this store (adjacent to the "Indian" island). It would be great if there was a 1hr limit dock there for islanders or boaters wishing to shop at the store. It's a bit of a hike carrying groceries or pushing a cart (if even allowed) all the way around to the current docks. Just a seed of an idea and my 2 cents.

Opposite bank: very shallow water for quite a ways out. Maybe encourage a property owner just out Pleasant Street, before the "yacht club", to take on project of very short term tie-ups..
FYI: It's a very long process to get permits for a new dock, let alone construction!

Suggestion: obtain a folding luggage 2-wheel cart. Some can carry up to 200+ pounds; I am not suggesting groceries weigh so much. My point is some are very rugged; look for wheels 6" diameter to navigate rough sidewalks, and the extension handle is long enough to be comfortable. Also, then there are folding containers, which look like milk crates but about 50% larger and sort of nest so they stack very well; originally made to temporarily hold manila file folders with the hanging rods. I have several, but they are now hard to find.

However, I've seen similar products in boating supply catalogs, for this very purpose!

Removing shopping carts is illegal; besides they do not take to rough terrain.

In an effort to not use plastic bags, carry several good shoulder bags for your purchases, sort of like the canvas utility boating bags but with the loops long enough to go on one's shoulder! Be a little creative! Available for minimal costs at lots of grocery stores are many style bags.

OR go to Heath's :laugh: They at least let you take the carts across the street to the docks. I know the prices are a bit higher and the selection isn't as large but.... In a pinch it just works.

Sometimes it is nice to drive a car in the summer after being on the island for extended periods of time. I sometimes worry that I am going to forget how to drive a car.

Spent Friday, Sat. and Sunday on the island, and the store in 19 Mile Bay was not open, at all. Anyone have any word on when they are going to open up?

I suppose you could bring a wagon with you and stow it under the cart while you're shopping, or maybe chain it to the bike rack. ;)

How about if there was a small fleet of wagons at the dock, and folks could rent 'em like they do at the airport. You could drop a couple of bucks and go shopping wherever you please. When you're done you bring it back to the same place. It might need a card swipe or lojack to keep track of them. It'd be nice if they floated too.

In the case of Alton Bay if you needed to get to Hannafords from the town docks and you didn't have wheels, perhaps a Hannafords van could pick you up and drop you off. You would pay for the ride to-and-fro at the store, just like another grocery. Not that they have such a thing now, but it's just an idea...

While convenient for folks, I'd hate to see this happen. I love the unobstructed view when we round the corner at the lights. The view of Indian Island and the straight shot down the lake is breathtaking, let's not ruin it! :)

As someone else stated, it is very shallow there. Just get in your car and drive and fight the summer traffic as the rest of us have to. The indian island in Meredith Bay is one of only a few spots left that isn't "owned" by someone who is making money from shorline property intown Meredith. Gimme a break.

There's a pretty good sized creek that very slowly flows from the large pond and wet lands behind Hannaford's and directly into Meredith Bay. It's a brief twp-minute portage across Route 25 and with a kayak, you could easily paddle right up to the back of Hannaford's.

Any chance of a complimentary rotisserie barbeque chicken for the first 10 kayakers who paddle right up to the deli counter?:D

But how about this? Raise the issue with the Hannaford's. At the IGA in Wolfboro they ENCOURAGE you to take the carriages to the docks and just send a bag boy to retrieve them later. The terrain ain't that bad in Meredith. The distance is a bit further in Meredith but if you didn't have to return the carriage that would probably work. Maybe they'd be accomodating. Would you tip a kid to help schlep everything to the docks and then take the carriages back? It''d be interesting to see if the new Hannafords was willing to "think outside the box" to accomodate the unique nature of having a grocery store "on the lake".

As for the dock idea. Yeah it's pretty boney in there. Probably not a workable solution even if the owners/town/state were willing.... But hey, nice that you're thinking about creative solutions.

Seeing as the lovely town of Merideth decided to let the hanafords build there they could hire a kid in the summer to run a shuttle service...

Today, I suggested at customer service that they start by selling bags with good long straps for over the shoulder.

They should sell collapsible carts which have space for purchases.

I disagree with allowing the in-store carts being taken to Meredith docks; for one thing where to place them? Just anywhere is an eyesore, and a danger to pedestrians who walk the board walk path along the entire waterfront - Pleasant Street to Gazebo at Church Landing.

Why doesn't someone approach Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Program, and/or Town Select Board, along with Hannaford's store manager. Be aggressive and communicate these options. They all will need to be prepared for traffic/pedestrian congestion & its management.

If it were me I would be standing out front, with Hannaford's permission of course, and asking people if they would like thier bags carried to the dock, I would have my trusty cart with me and a bet for tips only the kids could make a killing!

Why not ask the store manager? Might get a response when he/she knows there is a necessity, and it should be under cover where the wagons are.

Nice cart idea for many applications, but when you're shopping for provisions for a guest weekend on the island, we're talking a full, full-sized store grocery cart. Guess we'll have to stick with Heath's.

I agree. Anytime you let grocery carts end up near the water they will be at the bottom of the lake at the town docks. Also, rethink the plan when you consider the traffic problem of people slow ing traffic to walk carts back and forth across route 25. Traffic is going to back to Center Harbor.

Backpacking 30-40 lbs of Hannaford groceries across the 400 yards of highly scenic, flat, paved, shoreline walking path to the boat is so easy that even my Basset Hound could do it, if I had a Basset Hound. Even if it takes two trips.....aaarrrroooooo:D!

I have one in my basement, made by Kelty and must be vintage 70's.
It's not folding, has very rugged frame and waist belt, and I'd sell for first $15.00. I so want my basement emptied of formerly great items.

Good idea! Do you intend to buy? I'd have to walk back to my car! Demo with my groceries in it, walking one lap around my car! Makes me think: because it's not folding, store needs to have a temporary storage, so one can go shop, retrieve it, and go to the bagging area. THEN there is no waste of the plastic bags.

However, I do walk thru the store with my shoulder bag. I place my items in it and empty it at the register, provided I had not intended to buy too much to fit in bag!
