Alton Bay

Hi,

I spoke to someone yesterday that said a man went through the ice around Alton Bay a few days ago, and got out.

Any one know more about that.?

We've been in and out of Alton Bay a lot the last month so am wondering if there's a a place we should avoid...

I'd heard about a big preasure ridge, but it must have subsided by the time we came through.

It's me again.

A 9 year old had to tell me to Google it.
Maybe I just need more coffee.

We found the following:


ALTON, N.H.—An Alton, N.H., man is safe after his snowmobile crashed through ice on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Alton Fire Capt. Ed Consentino said the man broke through the ice late Thursday night and struggled at least 15 minutes in the water before pulling himself out.

He spent the night in an unlocked summer cottage on Little Mark Island and was there when authorities were called Friday morning after another snowmobiler found his machine stuck in a hole in the ice.

Searchers found the man in the cottage. He was cold, but otherwise okay. His name was not released.

But it doesn't tell us about Bubblers, current etc...

2 concerns are driving at nite and alone.

This is one of two incidents out near Little Mark. The other was a snowmobile that hit a pressure ridge close to Little Mark as well, which had not been there the day before when he had gone by.

A mutual friend of his told me Friday that he ended up going to Dartmouth, and evidently has some pretty serious injuries, which evidently were not as readily apparent immediately after the initial accident.

It's amazing how fast something like a preasure ridge can come up in certain light conditions. Flat untouched snow on a cloudy day can really mess with depth perception too. It helps me to find some contour, whether it's someone elses tracks or blown snow with some texture...

Clearly you have to keep you eyes open and be alert all the time.

Snowmobiling is a demanding activity and there are times where you lulled into a sense of comfort, but you really have to fight it because if your moving, you have to be in full control of the machine and have all your senses operating at their peek.

Whats the old boy scout motto,,, "be prepared"

I was most impressed with the rope and life preserver you had on your sled David, looks like a good idea for lake running.
