I was just looking around Wikipedia and found this story about a Mystery Stone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Winnipesaukee_mystery_stone)found in Meredith near Lake Winnipesaukee in 1872. Pretty impressive!

Nice find RIG.

Very mysterious. The Teepee seem out of place. I don't think that any local native american tribes used Teepees. The shelters that I have seen are made from tree bark laid out like shingles.

Still a mystery is a mystery....

You know ... that stone would look right at home atop a certain stone tower I've seen near Governor's Island ....

The Mystery Stone is on long-term view at the state historical society in Concord. It's been in their possession for quite a long time.

I'd be very surprised to learn it is an actual Abenaki artifact. After the stone's discovery in the 1800s, some researchers studied it and suggested the carvings could not have been rendered by the tools available prior to contact.
