Fourteen new islands
Six, no, make that seven, new prop-eating rock formations
A new "deep end" with diving well and 3-metre springboard
A designated zone for those huge boats that belong in the ocean
A small bay designated for PWCs
One-third of the Lake reserved for scuba diving only
Greatly expanded loon sanctuary
And the much-anticipated "No Monster Mansions" zone
Other than that, nothing new!

Is an update available to current owners of C-Map GPS cartridges? Does it require a full purchase price or is there an upgrade path?

You can type extremely well, even with "tongue in cheek" !

The threads about night boating have me thinking about investing in a GPS. I would like to be able to get a device that shows your current location on a detailed map of the lake. According to the Bizer site, you need a device with C-Map support so that you can load the Bizer map from a cartridge. Does anyone have any recommendations on specific devices that make this possible? What other features are available? Are they hard to install on a boat?
Thanks
Check out Standard Horizon Chart plotters you can find them at West Marine. They use a C-Map that displays Winni.

Help! We bought a GPS for Christmas with the Lake in mind, but we don't know too much about how to use it yet. What da heck is a C map???

I have a Standard Horizon CP150. Got it at the boat show last year. Nice unit, good readability, etc. Kind of wish I got the color unit, but it was a bit more expensive. With rebates at the show, I paid $295 for the CP150, which is about a $100 less than "normal" retail. The C-MAP was around $100.
We got ours from Boater's World.

Cowgirl,
C-map is a cartridge you insert into the GPS unit. It has the Bizer map programmed so that is what you see on the GPS screen.
HOWEVER, if your GPS is not c-map compatible then you can't use it. You have to use the base map that came with the GPS and a hard copy of the Bizer map.
Hope this helps.

CMap is a cartridge which covers (map wise) specific areas (like Bizer's one for Winni, which is essentially their chart). To use a CMap cartridge, you need a CMap compatible GPS. Otherwise, most GPS have a CD you can get with similar mapping. The ones that include Winni however usually won't have the detail of Bizers.

I purchased a Navman Tracker 5500i last year and am very happy with it. It supports C-MAP, and I have the Winnie cartridge.
It's pretty easy to install, but the key issue is positioning it on your boat so that it is visible from the operator's point of view and, most importantly in my estimation, being able to adjust it so that direct sunlight doesn't wash out the screen. The 5500i has a color screen. My only disappointment with it is that direct sunlight makes it difficult to see. A great aid for navigating around the lake at night, however!
One question for the forum: Is there a new C-MAP cartridge available that corresponds to the new edition of the Bizer map?

Thanks to Bizer for getting the 6th edition out early,so we can be ready for use with ice out. And thanks to Webmaster for making prepaid orders so easy. I got mine in the mail this morning. Nice look to the map, can't wait to compare it to the old edition.
Bizer's website doesn't mention anything about the 5th edition being ready for C[Map yet. May be a little early. Perhaps Bizer can put out an estimated release date.
thanks again.

Hi Cowgirl!
Did you buy a GPS or a Chartplotter, and is it fixed mount or hand held? A GPS will give your latitude and longitude, and probably a trail showing an image of your boat's movement (usually referred to as a "breadcrumb trail"). A chartplotter is a GPS that will do all of the above plus display your boat's position on a moving map.
If you bought a chartplotter, you will probably find that the level of detail you get with the free basemap in your unit is all but useless. You're probably going to want electronic charts to load into the chartplotter.
I learned the hard way that, for Lake Winnipesaukee, nothing comes even close to the chart available from a company called C Map. Their product duplicates Bizer's map of the lake as an electronic chart. Several brands of Chartplotter accept C Map electronic charts.
I bought two chartplotters (a Garmin and a Magellan) that can't use C Map products before C Map got the rights to Bizer's lake map.
I will never make that mistake again for a GPS that I intend to use primarily for navigating on the lake, though both are good units for other locations.
If you bought a Garmin, their MapSource TOPO CDs contain a reasonably decent map of the lake that can be loaded into many of their products.
If you bought a Magellan, they have a similar product called MapSend Streets and Destinations.
Both products lack the detailed NavAids information and shoreline detail you get with C Map's product. Neither one is cheap, and in both cases you will need to buy special cables to connect your GPS to your computer.
It is possible to manually add NavAids to both products as "waypoints". I spent many tedious nights at the computer doing so, but I think that Bizer sells electronic waypoint files that you might be able to use to spare you that effort.
Hope this helps!

My little hand held Garmin came WITH the cable to connect to the computer, I bet they all do, in any event, the cable is less than $20 if you need one.

Thanks one and all for your advice on GPS. I have the Garmin e-Trex Legend, which did come with cable. I hope the topo maps are helpful, I'll order them.
Just received the 6th ed. of Bizer in the mail. Just pouring over it and yearning for open water and warm days!

Cowgirl,
I have the same GPS as you. The Garmin Topo CD will get you the best map available for the lake that works on the Garmin. At least the land is depicted pretty accurately and there are a few navaids shown. Its a far cry from a real chart, but I've used it a lot and it will at least accurately show you where you are on the lake.

Hi Treerider!
Yep, the cable for the handheld is cheap.
I had to get the one that goes with a Garmin 168 hard mount unit, which includes a 110VAC power supply. That was the only way I could take the GPS home to connect to my PC. Not so cheap (but still a whole lot less than a laptop to bring up to the lake!)

Hi Cowgirl!
Good decision about the MapSource TOPO. It will make a big improvement.
I just went to the Bizer web site, and verified that their electronic waypoint file is compatible with Garmin units. You might want to think of getting a copy of that, too, and saving yourself long hours at your computer manually entering bouy locations!
