I saw this NY Times article on the lake and specifically the creation of the McMansions and thought I would share it.

I love the quote from Dave St. Cyr (Alton resident) in that article....

Some residents aren’t so sure any more. David St. Cyr, 60, who owns a small cabin in Alton, thinks the recent influx makes the lake too crowded. He refuses to take his boat out because of all the traffic, and said he couldn’t now afford to buy the cabin he and his wife bought in 1983 and live in.

“Now, if you don’t have money here, you ain’t getting nothing,” he said.

Someone sent me the link and I was just about to post it as well. Love the pictures. Recognized that first one right away - the Bahre estate!

Didn't we read pretty much the same article in the Globe a few months back?

and aren't the two papers owned by the same company? If so, it could be a recycled article for a different audience..

I like the part where they said 30 years ago the local people could afford to live on the lake, plumbers etc. I don't think he remembers too well. This was always a lake for the wealthy. Yes, it was less expensive to buy then but it was all relative.

Isn't the small house show on page two located near Lees Mill?

I poked around up that way for the first time back in August and it looks familiar...

It's amazing what these McMansions are paying in taxes. We know people on the lake who are paying close to thirty thousand dollars a year ! They can afford it, but I can't see paying that no matter how much money you have.

My house would fit in some of those places ten times over and my taxes in Jersey are over $13K now. Not that I want to start THAT discussion again.

What I wouldn't give for there to be some sort of enormous House Tour with all those places open to the public. I would definitely love to see some of them.

It depends on the town, of course, but I believe the taxes are around 1% for everybody. That means a $1M house will pay $10,000 in taxes. If NJ2NH pays $13,000 -- that means she is living in a $1.3M McMansion in NJ????

I thought the NY Times article was more positive/nuetral than the Globe's article a few weeks back.

Where are the taxes 1% for everybody? In NJ?

Not in NH. That's $10 a thousand, I know I'm paying at least double that.

1% for everybody.......I don't understand what you mean by this ? My friends home is worth about 1.8 million dollars and they pay about $28,0000 per year in property taxes.

In CT, I pay just under 3% of the home value each year, and it is among the cheapest towns in the state! This, on top of the 5.5% income tax, 3% annual vehicle excise tax, 6% sales tax, and about an extra $0.20/gallon fuel tax compared to NH...
