WTF? Why are people so up in arms over a webcam?

That happens with the BearCam. Two or Three boats a day on a busy weekend. They stay for a few minutes and never come in close.

You can bet the farm its really about something else.

There use to be a marker out there that kept most of the boat traffic further out. The marker was taken out last year so now the boats come a lot closer to shore. The webcam was also installed last year, so they believe all the traffic is a result of the cam.

Two summers ago I was passing through the NWZ opposite your enclave and yelled out Hello Bear Islander, You were on the dock and waved hello. I can't believe people would oppose boats just positioning themselves in front of a webcam and waving. You're right, it has to be something else the neighbors are upset about. Too bad, I like the Ossipee Web Cam, and I love yours. WINNOCTURN I hope common sense wins out.:)

My neighbor knocked on my door earlier this year and asked me to move the webcam because the boat traffic out front was taking away his right to privacy. I told him that the cam can't be pointed toward the sun and the current position is the only way it would work. He then asked me to take the webcam down. When I refused, he left saying that he would pursue his options.

Just like the BearCam, there are only a couple boats a day on a busy weekend that pull up to the cam. They call their friends and family on their cell phone, wave to the cam, and take off.

I wound my way through ice floes one Spring to be the only boat on the Broads that April—and to put myself on "Snake Eyes": still, I remained about ¼-mile off Rattlesnake Island.

On Winnipesaukee, sometimes all it takes is a "For Sale" sign in front of a McMansion to attract dozens of gawkers every day. :rolleye1: Once they get an eyeful, their sudden "hole-shots" interfere with the neighbors' water skiing activities.

I can see the need that some boaters will want themselves fully "on camera" to print out at home later or to e-mail the pics to friends.

(Just not understanding that need.) :confused:

BTW: US law has restrictions on an "attractive nuisance", which this particular webcam seems to fit.

Oh it's fun, we do it sometimes in the winter on the Bear Cam or the Weirs Cam with our snowmobiles. I guess it's kind of like that feeling you're on tv. It's harmless but then again I don't know how I'd feel if my neighbor put one up and boats were coming by to wave at the camera.

I just can't get enough of lakefront property owners who think their owning property prohibits others' enjoyment on the water. While there may be some laws somewhere on the books about mooring distances from shore, I can't imagine that boats/vessels are prohibited from idling or floating offshore, no matter the distance, as long as nobody is in physical jeopardy and indecent exposure is not involved. Is your neighboor a celebrity, politician or dignitary? Mitt Romney, right?

Remind him of his option to relocate to a more peaceful, less populated location.

Now that's just plain silly, to me. For heaven's sakes, he's on a LAKE! If I were lucky enough to own lakefront property, I will fully expect that boats would be going by -- sometimes slowly, perusing the waterfront properties or whatever. If someone wants privacy, they live on a property surrounded by tall shrubs or something, not on waterfront property where any one, at any time, can go by their property and see whatever is going on in the open. Perhaps he's one of those people who has the mindset "I was here first, therefore this lake is mine............."; of course, this is only a guess, not knowing his situation. For that matter, I live on a very busy road which certainly affects my privacy factor, but I don't get all worked up about the traffic going by -- even if they're slowing down for whatever reason. A lake is a thoroughfare for boats, just as a road is for cars.

How did your neighbor know you had the webcam installed, btw?

I'm always flattered when someone grabs a frame from the webcam. I really put it up there to watch the dock in the winter, but it has attracted many many viewers, which is pretty cool.

We had a "first" on the webcam on 9/6... the Winnipesaukee Belle cruised by loaded with people, stopped right in mid-webcam view and stayed there for about 20 minutes... we could see a wedding in progress and then lot's of cheering and camera flashes at the "i do"... after that she steamed off (the boat, not the bride)! The only thing we could think of was for people who couldn't make it to the wedding they told them to look at it live on the webcam!

Happy that it gets more use than just checking the aquatherm :)

Very ironic...I was recently talking with a friend who is a seasonal lake person, and I knew of two friends she had that were getting married this September. So I asked her last week, if indeed they were now married. And she said yeah, they were married on the 6th on the Winni Belle, which they had hired for the day. Strange I would now read this on the board. Also, the part you wrote about "the bride"....that would be "brides" as in plural, as in, well, you know. It was actually a Civil Union, not a wedding.

For those of you following this issue, the Town of Ossipee Code Enforcement Officer had ruled the paddler's webcam was not in violation of the Town's zoning ordinances and therefore allowable.

The neighbors subsequently appealed his determination.

Paddler chose not to speak at the hearing held this evening and asked me to represent his family, which I gladly did.

To make a long story short, the ZBA unanimously dtermined that the complaint was not valid and was a civil matter between paddler and the complainant. The Town's Attorney also sided with the Code Enforcement Officer.

Needless to say the webcam lives on, and we are all the better by being allowed to continue to enjoy it's splendor.

We do ask that anyone wishing to check out or appear on the camera be cognizant of the neighbor's valid concerns about close boating in the very shallow waters.

Other than that, thank you John for sticking to your guns and being the gracious webcam host that you are!

I'll confess to mugging in front of the Wolfecam while calling my wife or brother, but I shop in Wolfeboro on a daily basis. But I've never been tempted to seek out a lake webcam. Still, i look at that Broad Bay cam almost every day (especially when my girls are at Huckins), and have seen scant few boats lingering near shore.

Some folks need to take up recreational drinking.
