I'm looking for a loudhailer (for... hailing...:D) for our motorboat. I need something loud enough to be heard from a good distance away. Maybe a quarter mile or less?
We have a hookup on our VHF for it, but I don't know which speaker to get. Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks!!

HERE (http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producte/10001/-1/10001/249372/377%20710/0/loud%20hailer%20speaker/Primary%20Search/mode%20matchallpartial/0/0?N=377%20710&Ne=0&Ntt=loud%20hailer%20speaker&Ntk=Primary%20Search&Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial&Nao=0&Ns=0&keyword=loud%20hailer%20speaker&isLTokenURL=true&storeNum=5003&subdeptNum=3&classNum=437)is a link to the Boat/US - West Marine site for a loud hailer. It has optional speakers at the bottom of the page, I'm sure you could call them and ask what their hailing range is.

You should look at the manual for your radio to see what the rating is (ohms/watts). I think you should be puting out at least 15 watts for a hailer speaker to be effective. I have had some radios that put out very well over a hailer and other more expensive units that were terrible. I've had the best results with the large rectangular horns but then I haven't purchased one in years.

I have one of these on my boat. you can't beat it as it has a signal toot as well.
And not expensive for it's versatility.
Great for scaring the kids at Halloween, or waking up hungover guest that crash at your house after a party as well. So many uses, that your boat radio just can't do......:D
