Dogs on Bear Island (Split)

Hi Bear Islander;

Not to hijack the thread, but I am curious what the dog issue is?? Is it simply dogs are not allowed on the island or is it no unleashed dogs on the island??

The reason I am curious, is my wife and I rented a place on ????? island last week for ten days, and I was very surprised to see that most island dogs were wandering around freely which I had no problem with as I love dogs, and all the dogs were very friendly and obedient. I had my own dog which was kept on the rental property, but she had plenty of visitors while there. I was also surprised that there were no "landmines" to be found anywhere! Maybe the dogs are trained to go in their own yard??, and maybe I was just on a side of the island where the landowners had a personal agreement with each other?? Anyway, your post made me curious as I just assumed (incorrectly) that all island dwellers allowed this.

Hi

Meredith has a "leash law". Your dog must be under control at all times when not on your property.

A few islanders still let their dogs run free. If the dog is calm and friendly then most people don't mind. Unfortunately some have aggressive dogs and think its OK for them to run free as well. There have been a few problems, complains and a dog was mauled. A few years ago two dogs killed a faun near the mail dock.

New Hampshire Fish and Game got involved because apparently dogs harassing deer is NOT allowed. We have lots of deer in a closed environment. Interestingly I found out that beagles are natural deer chasers.

These days the problem is mostly under control. I think part of the problem is owners that see their dogs through rose colored glasses.

On any given weekend at our place on Mark we have a minimum of 6 (4 are ours) dogs. We installed a Dogwatch system to keep them contained, like the one we have at home. Occasionally we get a runaway when someone breaks through but everyone around is is quite dog friendly. Sometimes we will have another show up at our place out of the blue, but its never been an issue.

Our neighbor has a HUGE german shephard that they keep locked up. He is friendly but still an overgrown puppy and very jumpy with long claws. Not the greatest around small kids. He has never been a bother to us though.

If deer are getting killed, that is a serious problem that deserves to be addressed.

Codeman... agreed 100%... The island I was on we enjoyed the dogs coming by as they were very well behaved. As a matter of fact, if you wanted one of the dogs to go home you just called him by his name and said go home and off he would go. We loved it.

I do have a a lot more respect for you island dwellers after spending 10 days on one...The loading up of the boat with materials and supplies can be rather cumbersome at times. Needless to say The V-Toon came in real handy!!

I thought is was just me, my two cents are that it would be nice if an owner calls their dog off my deck once, they might do something to stop it from happening over and over again. We have small kids that are afraid of dogs when they jump and bark and a leash law in Alton (I don't know if there is one) would be a good thing on the island.

Once or twice is not an issue, but if you tell the neighbor's dog "no" more than you tell your kids "no", something is wrong.

Just my two cents as a non owner.

Between 11am and noon is when the Mail Boat stops at the mail dock. Spaces are very limited at that time, and be sure not to block the outer dock because that is for the Sophie C.

All of the trails are private property, but I doubt anybody will mind an ex-islander and friend taking a walk around the trails.

Dogs are a "hot topic" on the island. One of the few topics where islanders do not see eye to eye. You are better off not bringing one, but if you do make sure its on a leash. It's the law.

What I would like to understand is that the original request was about finding a public dock on Bear Island, I am wondering what a dog law has to do with that?

The original question was about finding dock space so he and a friend could visit the island. I volunteered some additional information I think island visitors should know. That it is all private property so please act accordingly, and that if he brings a dog he should keep it under control.

I believe it's my privilege to offer friendly advice along with the information. The topic of threads sometimes migrates. Is that a problem?

I was reading it and I actually forgot the original question. The information and thread about dogs on islands or otherwise is an excellent thread. If I may be so bold I would ask the Webmaster to move the thread to its own home. I think it is a great discussion point.

I'm not saying it's a problem. But you made an assumption that he was bringing a dog and in my opinion that's out in left field. Seemed odd and a bit self-serving to me.

The original question was NOT about docks, no matter what the title is. The original question was about visiting Bear Island. I never assumed anybody was bringing a dog, notice the word "if".

Anyway if the tread was hijacked it was done by ishoot308, not me.

The faun was killed by someone with no connection to the island that stopped by to let his two killer dogs have an illegal run. A couple of weeks ago a family showed up with unleashed dogs and were asked to leave the island. In this atmosphere I took it upon myself to let AC2717 know about the state off affairs on the island with respect to dogs. I was trying to prevent his being inconvenienced or embarrassed.

This is another mountain out of a mole hill that has more to do with recent legislation than anything else. Get over it people.

I have edited my original reply and opted instead to add you to my ignore list. I do however take exception to your name calling here and accusations of being childish and immature. I am not going to stoop to your level and return vollies. I think your actions here are disgusting and unneccessary.

Very typical of so many threads...
1. Starts with a question, or good, useful information.
2. Followed up with some type of difference of opinion.
3. Followed by spirited debate.
4. Turns to childish ridicule, or all out battle.
What a shame.
As an aside, I found no fault with the first dog comment. I actually found the issue of island dogs interesting, as I never had concidered it.
And I still don't think the original poster has his answer...although he probably has long since stopped reading his own thread.

To finally answer the original question ,( think it was with exta information as a just in case), you may dock on the inside of the mail dock and use the beach directly behind it as that is town property. To venture beyond that, if you are visiting an island resident, they should meet you and escort you to their property. (I don't know why anyone would not just dock at the party they are visiting) otherwise to go beyond the beach you are trespassing.
I would not park on a public street and then walk around in the backyards of the houses in that neighborhood. No one else should do the same on Bear Island. Their were many breakins this winter on the island so we a suspicious of anyone who does not belong

Actually the beach behind the mail dock is not town property. It's private property. The town only owns a very small bit of land about 20 ft square. It is the grassy area where the phone pole and streetlight are. Other than that the island is private property.
