Hybrid cars make a lot of sense because the horsepower required to get them going far exceeds the horsepower to keep them going on the highway. When you put your foot on the brake you lose energy due to heating in the brake pads, but hybrids often have regenerative systems that recover that potential energy that is usually lost. Cars do a lot of stop and go.

Boats run at a much higher ratio of peak to average horsepower and when they slow down, the water does a pretty good job. I can't see any easy way to recover much of the energy lost in slowing.

Hybrid boats have been around for a long time. How do think old submarines work?:rolleye2: Run the engines and charge the batteries. New subs are nukes. That's the ticket a nuclear boat.

These are like the Duffy electrics and offer a generator or solar panels to recharge the batteries. They are slow but for $1 for 8 hours of cruising and no annual oil changes and other maintenance, these are more akin to an electric sailboat. Pretty neat for clean, silent boating.

Either Diesel/electric or nuclear subs are hybrids, not to save energy, but to generate no lethal CO when underwater. Both forms of propulsion are also less noisy when undersea. No noise and no CO, that's the ticket.:)
