Fire Weather Warning

Believe it or not, even after the wettest winter in quite some time, we now find ourselves facing high fire danger from the very dry April we've had.

The National Weather Service has a fire weather (red flag) warning in effect for the lakes region.

That means conditions are prime for the spread of wildfire. Winds combined with very low humidity and the fact that we've had such a dry April have allowed natural debris to become very dry and ready to ignite from even a small source like a spark or a cigarette.

Some relief could be on the way: NOAA has circled the northeast for the potential of heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday.

I noticed this morning that in the Hartford, Ct area, they had a FLOOD WARNING and RED FLAG WARNING at the same time. The FW was for the Conn. river which is very high due to upstream melting. The RFW was for very dry fine-fuels and very dry and windy conditions. It is rare that on location has both warnings at the same time, but this is New England.

... right before 5pm, and he warned us of brush fires going on in Wolfeboro. All was well with the burn, then those crazy winds kicked in last night out of nowhere. My poor husband was out there with the hose making sure all was well and the fire was up against our stream, but still... it's a permit I almost wished we hadn't gotten when that crazy cold front came through like that.:(
