Hi all,
We have not been able to get up to the lake for the last couple of weeks. What is the current snow depth? Is everything melting?

Currently 18 inches at Black Cat. This number is continuously updated at the Winnipesaukee WeatherCam (http://www.blackcatnh.com). If you visit the WeatherCenter (http://www.blackcatnh.com/weather) and click on 'rain and snow amounts' you will find NOAA's latest snow maps of New England.
I just got back from a hiking trip into Tuckerman Ravine on Mount Washington and found that the spring skiing season has just begun there. There's still 3 feet of well-packed snow on the trail near Rt. 16. Higher up, trail signs have been shoveled out. The first aid cache at the base of the ravine was avalanched about a month ago and has since been shoveled out... its roof is still on-level with the snow.
All the way from Lake Winnipesaukee to Jackson and Pinkham Notch, the snow cover is typical of February.
Wildcat Mountain Ski Area is still 100% open and reporting conditions "As good as April gets."

CLA, i've looked at the snow depth map on your site (great by the way) but I can't tell if Moultonborough Neck is in the yellow, green or blue area...
so can someone that lives in Moultonborough, on the Neck, Shaker Jerry Road area, share how much snow is currently still on the ground? Last I heard was like 15-18 inches...
Just wondering if it's melted at all? The original plan was to head up on the 18th to do some clean up, raking, etc -but I don't think that's happening! :)

Traveling down the Neck every day the snow is going away fast....rain this weekend should take all but some of the biggest piles away....all that remains where there was once snow is just alot of sand and dirt....Haven't been down Shaker Jerry but will give it a go tomorrow on the way to Hermit Cove....:) I'll give you an eyewitness opinion....

Good chance the snow will be gone but, if the few bare spots on my lawn in Meredith are any indication (I'm mostly north facing), you'll be raking in the mud!

As of yesterday, snow depth now greatly varies even in locations 100 feet apart. Therefore the NWS snow depth map is becoming less reliable because it can only give an average of the general area.
In the sun, there is no snow at all anymore. Lightly wooded areas have 1 or 2 inches of snow. Heavily wooded areas still have a foot, and large snowbanks remain where there are evergreens shading them.
If your yard gets a lot of sun at this time of year, you probably have bare ground. If you have dense pine forest, you probably still have a lot of snow.
I'm not sure what to call the snow depth right now, because there is no number that represents my own yard, let alone a bigger area! The spot that I've been using had 10 inches at the end of yesterday. It's behind a small evergreen but it gets sun part of the day. Part of the yard is bare, too. I had one enormous snow pile that just melted, but its twin sits under the shade of a hemlock and doesn't show any sign of melting before June.

Just like a drive thru Florida.....seriously.......took a detour down Shaker Jerry late this AM and found remnants of plowed snow on the sides of the road...wetlands are wet and standing water is prevalent and yards have snow in amounts lessened by sunlight...bare ground in every yard, though. The rain today should take away alot of the snow. Y'all come!:)

Thanks CLA and HillTopper, and Hermit Cover for the Shaker Jerry report!
We are in a very deep wooded area, so, we will see...

This is what we have left on our lawn in Meredith. It's going to be awhile, between the snow melting and the ground drying out, before I think about Spring yardwork...

Brother-in-law was up last weekend, says not much snow around Morrison Cove. Was be able to drive down to the camp. Also 10' of open water along the shore. Won't be long now.

What elevation are you at in Gilford, Steve? Is your property north facing?

SteveA, you need to put Yuki in front of that snow pack. He's been lounging all winter! He must understand that in today's market a kitty can't just sit around consuming cat food and claiming to a weathercat.
What will really be fascinating is seeing anyone's pictures of snowpack remaining in May, which is starting to look more likely. It surely wouldn't be something we've had for a long time, at least decades if not more than a century. We've had *new* snow in May as recently as 2002, but not wintertime snow remaining on the ground that late - at least around here. Start thinking of the best way to photograph it so that it's in the same picture with something proving it's May, or at least well into the spring.

Yes the front of the house faces NW. the back faces SE, but is in full shade from the large pine forest that we are close to. Gunstock Mountain blocks the very early morning sun. (We can see the lights from the night sking all winter.) The Gunstock River runs 30' below the back of our yard.
Elevation.. don't know. The best I can figure from the topo maps.. is we are around 800'

He did agree to go out today in the sunshine.. but no camera was handy... I'll try on Saturday!

We almost always have some snow in May on the north side of the house. We are in the hills of Tuftonboro.

He was not willing to go were the "deep" stuff is still piled up. :rolleye1:
As far a May goes, I'd be shocked if we didn't still have "snow pack" in early May. The pic was taken in an area that is close to the house and melting fairly quickly. Some of the "piles' that came off the roof will certainly be still around in May. Many of them are still 5' plus at this point.

Loon Mtn has announced their last day will be Monday 4/21.
IN Maine, Sunday River always has free day on May 1. Probably much of the ski area will be open.
In my yard in Meredith I have two piles 8' high from roof. One is north side, which will be there at least two weeks May 1.
