Motorcycle Registration

Why is it that Laconia makes it so difficult to register a motorcycle? I am a tax payer (and a high tax payer at that) that owns in Laconia but live in Mass.
I want to keep my bike at my N.H. house and ride when I come up on weekends.
For some reason the Town Cerks office makes it next to impossible to do so. They want proof of residency and a N.H. drivers license. They have some sort of non-residence tax, thats unbeleivable. Come on now doesn't the fact that I own property and pay property tax afford me the same rights as those who live there year round? Should my boat be registered in Mass. also?

That's total BS. You can register as a non-resident and you don't need AND CAN'T HAVE a NH drivers license. I had a car registered here for many years before I became a resident. You just can't take it out of the state for moe than 24 hrs I believe. Have them check with the NHSP if they don't understand. Sometimes town clerks think they run the world.

This same question was asked and answered two weeks ago in a similar thread. Go HERE (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5706&highlight=registration) to obtain the State DMV phone number in post #2 and they will instruct you on how to obtain an out-of-state NH registration for your motorcycle. :)

There are no restrictions on where you travel imposed by the State. If your insurance company says you can't travel out of state, then its time for a new insurance company.....but that is another matter.

What the state imposes is a stamp across the top of the registration that says non-resisident. And for my boat trailer I had to sign a paper which stated that I was registraring the trailer as a non-resident and couldn't travel with the trailer out of the state of NH.

Skip is correct it is not the state of NH implimenting the restriction. It is the surounding states. Because most states surounding NH tax boats, motorcycles, cars etc. If you are a resident of that state they want your car registrared there. Just like you have your license in the state of your primary residence. The big problem, and probably why the Laconia town clerk was such a pain, is that someone did a no-no and took a NH registered vehicle to there home state and got caught, the home state then sent a nasty note to the town of Laconia, and ask why they permitted it. Hence why the town of Moultonborough, had me sign the paper.

You can go wherever you want, no matter the state. Insurance will cover you if you stay at a hotel in NY or ME. If you register in NH, but store the vehicle somewhere else, then they might care. The key word would be storage.
