Last Fall we had a huge weeping willow tree that cloged our french drain around our home. Needless to say water backed up into our cellar. The drain line has been cleaned out. We decided to cut the tree down. Right now there is a stump approx. two ft high and we do plan on having that ground down this Spring. My question is what about the roots. Do they have to be taken out also? Will they keep growing to a certain extent?

I have heard that the root system of a willow tree is eleven times the size of the part of the tree that you can see. It is extremely difficult to kill one. They will keep growing, even after they are cut down. I would ask a tree expert for advice.

You are right on. A willow will continue to sprout new trees no matter what you do unless the whole trunk and root sytem is REMOVED. Good luck as they are a very root full tree, but usually close to the top of the ground and tap roots seek out the water pipes etc.

My understanding is that the stump must be treated with a translocating herbicide to kill the roots. Ask your county agriculture agent for advice.
