Morning, everyone.

I was sending bunch of links about Alton to my niece and I chanced upon the one about the bay airport. In huge letters on the homepage it says that the Alton Bay Ice Airport is closed. This was on Monday. Is it stilled closed? No Fly-In on Sunday? Is the Winter Carnival still on?

Enquiring minds (who are supposed to drive up on Saturday) need to know? Any news would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, here is the link: http://ossipeeaviation.com/alton-bay-ice.html

I am bringing my daughter and her friends up to Alton for the long weekend. They have been really looking forward to the Alton Bay Winter festival. Can someone give me the lowdown on activities, including the fly in.

Thanks

According to Ossipee Valley Aviation's web site (in a posting from Glen Horne a few days ago) The runway is closed for the same reason people had a hard time getting around on the ice during the Rotary Fishing Derby... there has been an incredible amount of snow combined with warm/cold/warm/cold/warm/cold weather conditions. Lots of slush covering lots of water on top of the primary lake ice, and the surface glop is in a constant state of melting and re-freezing. Not exactly smooth landing conditions - imagine landing gear breaking off upon landing, aircraft tires popping when passing over a sharp ice mound, or landing gear setting into a molasses-like surface and going from 85 knots to zero in 1 second or less... not fun...

In the event they are able to plow it, and the fly-in takes place this Sunday, pilots should watch for the possibility of IFR conditions to the south of here, moving in here after dark. Going south from NH may not be an option for VFR pilots on Sunday afternoon.
