...I can't help but think, "only 97 days until we open our camp for the summer."
Not that I'm counting or anything...

My family and i have also been looking at the snow and wondering about Ice Out. But the snow keeps piling up, burying The Boat, pushing back the time before it once again plies the waters of the big lake.

...it is the 26th of February, and again the snow is falling. Heavy and wet this time (at least that is what it is down here in the Merrimack Valley). The good news is that now there are only 80 days remaining until we open our seasonal camp...

Spent two hours, late yesterday, shoveling snow off the roof, and was impressed with its' icy-heavy-weight. To call it heavy would be an understatement. Apparently, the amount of snow on a roof can vary greatly as determined by things like the roof pitch and the exposure to sunlight.

Drove by the former Rhinehart GMC-Buick in Plymouth and took a minute to look at the colllapsed roof. The roof over what had been the service bays had collapsed from the snow, and the amount of damage is huge.

Hopefully, this storm will be all snow without any rain. Probably, rain would create more of a roof problem than snow.
...................

Here's an advance warning.....you read it here first before it happened.....tomorrow's Union Leader and Citizen will report an Ossipee roof cave-in at the Easy Cafe that gave customers just seconds to get out fast with no personal injuries. The roof groaned and cracked, and everyone headed for the exits....fast!

....the power of the internet!:D

YES, very true. Snow can be (I forget the exact word) evaporate to the air, as water in a puddle evaporates. Snow can disappear without changing to water!

Rain on top of a snow-covered roof will get absorbed in the snow and add significant weight. Best to remove before there is a problem.

In Lakes region, forecast is for maybe 12" snow!

The word is sublimate, a transition from a solid directly to gas. Snow and ice can do this, at times, when the temperature is below freezing.

Two well-known substances that sublime fairly easily are dry ice and the chemical Naphthalene, used in moth balls.

Since we're talking about snow and ice and such, it's interesting to note that the opposite of sublimation is deposition. The formation of frost is an example of meteorological deposition. I'm sure our weather experts here on the Forum can provide a lot more interesting explanations.

Aahh, and a beautifull example of that is rime ice formations on trees and buildings and the like especially on top of mountains.Mt Washington has some spectacular creations.

...does this all mean that due to the wieght of the snow and ice, my screen house roof, which I chose to brace with tbars this year, instead of taking the whole structure down, had most likely caved in on itself????
I'm guessing yes, and will find out Friday, when I make the hour and a half drive up 93. Possibly I can arrive in time to remove the snow and ice.
Very hopeful...but doubtful at the same time.

I wouldn't panic yet SA. While a lot of roofs are giving up the ghost, I'm constantly amazed at how well my neighborhoods 100+ year old roofs with 2+ feet of snow on them have held up. Good luck!

According to the streaming audio from www.lrmfa.org, (Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid - dispatch) Laconia FD has confirmed a roof collapse with walls bowing out, after being called to Billy's Place on Lakeside Ave at the Weirs.

Lakeside Ave is now closed as a result, while crews do what they do. The gas to the building has just been shut off by PSNH. Firefighters just announced the collapse of a 60 x 30, 2-story building on Lakeside Ave.

No further details.
