Made the last trip to the island today, on the way up all the small water holes next to the road were frozen over and all the lakes had some skim on parts of them.

Frozen spray on the shore line, by the looks of it the waves yesterday were crashing pretty high up the bank, I'd guess 4ft out there. Was a bit chilly on the way over but the lake was good.

How many weeks until ice in ?

Tonight I saw ice forming in the normal protected spots around The Inn At Bay Point in Meredith Bay.

Water temp at Black Cat WeatherCam is 40 both at the surface and 10 feet down. For a time last night the surface reading dropped to 39 but came back up again when the air temp stopped falling (it bottomed out at 10) and the dewpoint also came up.

Ice-in depends totally on the temp, wind and humidity now. Extremely low humidity (dewpoint near or below zero F) normally associated with arctic blasts would help the water temp to drop quickly, especially if wind blows over the water surface. However, if it stays windy, the open areas of the lake will not freeze until we finally get a clear, calm and cold night. If the air temp comes back up to normal it will slow the water's rate of cooling which is currently about 2 degrees per week.

The anticipated snowpack will help reflect heat away from the earth for as long as it remains... this will be especially noticeable if we get a clear calm night with low dewpoint.

Drove by 19 Mile Bay this afternoon and was surprised to see ice forming as far out as Chase Isl. It wasn't solid but thinly formed in sections. If the wind stays calm, this may be the start. Winter Harbor and Wolfeboro Bay had no visible ice.

I must admit I was a little disapointed by yesterdays white caps out there. :rolleye1:

The ice is forming quick up near Ambrose Cove marina (the old Aries), to the point you couldn't navigate a boat south from there. Mid afternoon, I saw one boat pulling another across the lake towards the marina. They were going slow and snaking around the skim ice. In 15 years, the earliest I've seen it safe to walk on the ice is December 17'th - and within a week it had opened up again. This may be a record year!

Here in north central MA, the ponds I pass on the way to work skimmed over as of yesterday morning, and the thickening continued today.

It's the earliest I can recall in several years.

But it does look like it will be somewhat warmer next week.

I've seen some ice along the shore of Lily Pond (at the end of the runway at the Laconia Airport) as well as some in Glendale, Smith's Cove and in among the slips at Fay's over the past couple of days.

Somehow I don't think it will be a repeat of last winter with good boating going on during 65 degree weather in January.

Yup, it sure appears that it'll offset last year's late ice in.

So when can we start to "challenge" ABCCC for the winter contest ?

The WinniFlyer is hungry and needs to be fed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those interested, Lake Ossipee, Lake Wentworth & Crescent Lake are all frozen over! Looks like a more normal winter this year so far.

Remember that when the ice forms the ice fishing holes float back to the surface. Watch your step and don't trip in one;)

:D Lord, no more ice hole comments please. I landed on moderation last year because of them!

I noticed yesterday morning that Paugus Bay has iced over about 1/3 of the way out from Rt. 3, and it was still like that this a.m.!

Ice formation is going to start to accelerate. Looks like we're a couple of weeks ahead of a "typical" winter -- if there is such a thing. The upcoming wind will hamper things a bit but the overall projected trends in air temps will support rapid ice formation once it calms again. It won't be long now.

I noticed between last night and this morning that:

a. Paugus Bay has not lost any ice.
b. Weirs Bay is beginning to form ice between the public beach and the pier about 1/3 of the way out.
c. Winnisquam seems to have iced over completely in the lower section beside Rt. 3 behind the Anchorage.

Ice in by New Years? :rolleye2:

Looking at the Spencer Hughes web cam it looks like the ice is close to the Mount Dock. Is it up that far?

Will there be a bed race this year?

Noticed last night ice from mainland out to little island infront of us, approx 100 ft. This goes over to the Rattlesnake Landing and is snow covered! It's coming!

:coolsm: Everything aound the south end of Bear Island, from Mark to Horse and north up towards Centre Habor has a solid and thin looking sheet of ice, now. Drawing a line from Horse Island to the east side of Mark Isl and going towards Governors is still all open water.

It won't be long

(Just remember that 1964 hit song by The Beetles and sing along...)

The heavy snow yesterday accumulated on top of the near-freezing water near our shoreline. During the afternoon a slight breeze came up which blew the layer of snow into "wrinkles", almost like ribbon candy. We've never seen this before.

Must have been perfect type conditions for the snow to form like that. How long has it lasted?

Must have been perfect type conditions for the snow to form like that. How long has it lasted?Al, the snow "wrinkles" lasted only for a couple hours before the wind shifted and they were blown out toward open water. The open water where they went was frozen over this morning, so those wrinkles of snow may have become frozen into the ice.

Hi Gang,
Is there a general date when ice is usually completely in? Is it like ice out that changes from year to year? When do the bob houses roll the dice on ice thickness and appear in the bays?

Thanks,
