Thanks to everyone who views Snake Eyes every day, every week; during ice-in and ice-out.; all year 'round. The camera seems to be failing. It is old and the technology within is not nearly as clear as is needed to view this important part of the lake.

Help is needed to get a new setup that will be more reliable. Snake
Eyes can receive donations through PayPal or credit card (which PayPal processes). You do not need a PayPal account to use a credit card.

If you would like to contribute to keep this valuable resource going just go to Snake Eyes and click on the donate button.

Thanks to those who noticed the button and have already contributed!

How much is a spiffy new camera? Maybe the donation per member is really cheap.

The price varies depending on the model and the accessories. We are looking at a StarDot camera an upgraded lens.. and some networking equipment... $2k or so... and some extra for connection costs.

Here are some images (http://www.stardot-tech.com/netcamxl/samples.html)from the StarDot site on the possbile quality of the images. The new Snake Eyes will initially be on a phone line, so the quality will be a little less.. as soon as I can get a high speed connection, the larger high quality images can be posted. It is anticipated this camera will be viable for many years, hence the desire to buy the latest technology that will last.

Again thanks for the contributions!

Sunset Bob - nice avatar! Wanna drag?
I would love to race again. My poor Firebird sits in my garage just rusting away.It seems that spending a Sunday afternoon at the lake is a lot more relaxing than siting in the staging lanes in a car that is 120 degrees with sweat running into my eyes
Car runs 11:5s@120 mph Still want to drag?

IG - I'm so grateful for all the time and effort you put into Snake Eyes - I remember your trip last winter with FLL to get it back up for all of us to enjoy. I also remember your inspiration.

I did my two cents too. Will you keep us posted as to how it's going? I'm sure the response will be great - but if not we'll lean on them! ;)

thanks

Sunset Bob - I don't have a drag machine anymore but I could give it a shot in my suburban. That firebird sounds like fun! Sorry to go off-piste here - I will make a donation!

Thanks rrr... let them all get through Christmas... then lean away!!!

For those of you who are shopping online... if you go to www.rattlesnakecam.com/watch.htm (http://www.rattlesnakecam.com/watch.htm) there is a little Amazon.com search box. If you search for an item from there, then purchase... Snake Eyes gets some money... and as usual... click on the google ads and we get cash... On www.rattlesnakecam.com (http://www.rattlesnakecam.com) there is a link to go shopping at a lot of online stores... we get a % of that sale... So there is more than one way to support Snake Eyes.

Thanks all... and happy shopping!!!

IG -

I signed up for the shopping connection to the Snake Eyes fund, and last night when I ordered some items from Coldwater Creek, the Snake Eyes fund popped up. So....not only did I get use of my $30 coupon for holiday shopping, but Snake Eyes got some $$ in the kitty. What a Country!!

Hey ... maybe we all could give gifts of Snake Eyes contributions for Christmas presents to all of our friends. (I'm already a contributor of course).
Island Girl ... could the new camera have a zoom lens so that I could zoom in on my place on Cow? I like to check my wood pile to make sure my neighbors aren't helping themselves.
I think that technology is possible.
Oh, and have you checked out the Corinthian Yacht Club cam? There's rotates every couple of minutes ... very nice.

Just a thought... and not something I have much experience in but...

Might there be some grant money available for this? Perhaps from some freshwater conservation group or something?? I'd be willing to donate time in assisting with the writing and sending off for the grant but wouldn't be comfortable "driving" the project...

Just a thought... (forgive me if this has come up already...) :D

Also, have you perhaps considered getting a used camera?

I would like to donate to this worthy cause. I do not use PayPal nor do I send my credit card or financial information over the net. I would rather send a check. Is there an address for this purpose? If there is then how should the check be made out?

I enjoy the Snake Eyes camera. Will the new camera have the ability for users to pan, tilt and zoom?

This week I placed orders with Amazon, Blair, QVC, Lands End, JC Penney and Calendars.com. (As you can see I HATE going to stores -- especially here in northern NJ.) Thank goodess for the internet and UPS! Anyway, all of these vendors are now making donations based on these purchases for the Snake Eyes camera. Who knew doing Christmas shopping online would also benefit IG's fund?

Everybody keep shopping!

You have probably noticed that Snake Eyes failed this morning... The power, phone and isp are all working. This usually means a reboot is in order. If anyone has a boat still in and would like to be the hero this year, I will send instructions on how to reboot!!! The is a lot of ice on the dock, so care will be needed.

The next solution is to replace the cam as soon as the lake freezes. With the very cold temps and the lake temp at 35 degrees as of yesterday our pond could freeze over soon (we are hoping!!!!).

Thanks for all the donations... we are still quite short of the amount needed for a new cam... so if you can... please donate... just go to www.rattlesnakecam.com (http://www.rattlesnakecam.com) and click on the donate button.

Thanks so much

I have not used the igive website before but it looks like a decent tool. Question- if I sign up (which I did) and give my login to others so that they do not have to register on igive for the cause will it work that way? All of the sites that you shop on require their own login/account info so I do not see any issue. Obviously if others are using it I do not want their secure info being emailed to myself.

IG: a tip I got from "feb" on this forum was to purchase an X-10 telephone responder and X-10 appliance modules for my modem/router/webcam setup. Not sure if you have considered this set-up before, but it allows me to shut down and restart the equipment just by calling the house and entering a couple codes. This was necessary for me to assure continuous operation because I do not get up to my house over the winter and needed a remote option. It works great. It may not be worth it to you if you can get out to the island most of the year. The telephone responder is about $69 and the appliance modules are about $18 each retail; you may be able to get better deals. Smarthome.com has descriptions of the items if you are interested.

I like LP's idea and it's given me a thought ... though not one immediately useful to this situation as it stands now.

What kind of hassle is involved in rebooting the webcam ? Does it come back to full normal configuration after a power cycle/reboot or does it need some manual "fiddlin with" ? If it's the former then it might be useful to put a simple timer on the power line (like you have for X-mas lights) and have it turn off from midnight to 12:05 every day when you're gone for the season.

A reboot a day keeps the webcam blues at bay ???

Mee-n-Mac: I think that works too. Bear Islander mentioned in another thread from this summer that that is what he does.

I've gone the cheaper route. I have a digital lamp timer and it powers down my setup every day for about a minute in the middle of the night. *Worse case* you are down 24 hrs minus a few minutes.

After a power shut down the cam usually powers right up... there have been times where it seems to lose it's ip address and I have to reset that manually.

I really think you need to sit down with this ip and have a talk and teach him his address so that he doesn't get lost again. Do you think this may work or is he a real slow learner?

We all want to see the pictures of ice in and ice out. Island Girl works hard to make that possible for us - but she needs better equipment. So now that we all have those gift cards to redeem, don't forget to do your shopping through snake eyes! Here are the instructions IG gave us:

Just a curious: Snakes Eyes went off line at 6:17:17 AM on 12/17 and the Winnipesaukee Cam Alton Bay went off line at 6:16:53 AM just before Snake Eyes. Both have not been up since. Could there be something more amiss since the Winnipesaukee Alton Bay cam is on the mainland and obviously accessable? I have seen no comments other than about Snake Eyes and wonder what the problem  is with the Winnipesaukee Alton Bay Cam.

Hi Island Girl

How do you rename the recent images so you can show the last few. I am no expert at html but I know you are doing it on Snake Eyes.

Is it a script that is activated by a cron job?

Island Girl
01-07-2008, 11:14 AM
The script in the camera does that... The problem is that it only renames image 1, image 2, image 3, etc. So the so called current image on the Snake Eyes page is always image 1... therefore up to a half hour old... If you go to the pictures.htm.. a display of all three images is there.. each ten minutes apart.

I would prefer a script that has a current.jpg then renames the last ten images each time. What are you using in the stardot?

IG

Bear Islander
01-07-2008, 11:46 AM
Both my Stardot and Axis 2110 cameras ftp to my website and overwrite the previous image.

I wonder if my Axis cameras have the three image capability. What model do you have?

I have been looking into Perl scripts that can rename a file. I think it will require an external cron job programed to hit and activate the script on a predetermined schedule. I'm in a little over my head but that is the way I usually learn stuff.

Island Girl
01-07-2008, 12:27 PM
I have the 2110. I think you recommended it to me a long time ago and I picked it up on Ebay...

There are several stardots now...
Do any of you (including our wonderful webmaster) have scripts that we could use???

Thanks to all of you who contributed to the Snake Eyes upgrade fund.. I have purchased the new webcam. Without you... there would be no camera... all who view the webcams daily also thank you!!!!!!!!!

I have only spent a little time with the new camera but it promises to deliver an outstanding picture. Although I have it working ..... I need to test it with a modem (which is on the island).

As soon as I can get to the island I will try to get the old camera to send pictures again.

Once I am comfortable with the new camera I will install it on the island..

I will purchase networking components when I have enough to pay for the service.

You have all been wonderful!!!!!
