View Full Version : Drop everything and head to the Lake
Island Life

I just returned from three days at the Lake and it was stunning. No boat traffic and no wind, so the water was like glass - like nothing I'd seen all summer. Warm days and chilly nights - perfect if you have a wood stove. So my advice is to make your excuses at work and head to your favorite place.:D

I was out there today. Truly enjoyable. Saw TWO boats. Great weather. Bring a sweatshirt. Supposed to be in the 80's on Thursday???? SWEEEEET.
Water was calm as could be. We were in a paddle boat in Moultonboro Bay and crept up near some loons playing. What a blast!
Actually, I'd rather you'd stay home wherever that may be. Nothing personal. Ha!

The day was near perfect.......sunny, with no humidity. I love September & October up here. Almost no traffic......warm days, cool evenings, the leaves changing. Really just about as good as it gets on God's green earth IMHO:)
This is from Ralph Waldo Emerson: "New England has a good climate.....the finest climate in the world. If we have coarse days, dog days, and white days, and days that are like ice-blinks, we also have yellow days, and crystal days, days which are neither hot nor cold, but the perfection of temperature."
That sums up autumn in New Hampshire for me.

This whole week is supposed to be like this... it's wonderful - with today being the warmest day of the week, high around 80 degrees.

We were up Monday to Wednesday. We boated to Meredith on Tuesday and Wolfeboro on Wednesday. Calm water, even in the Broads. Few boats, docks wide open, no waiting at restaurants. We took the PWCs back into Green's basin and Lee's Mills and putted around. We saw several loons, a couple put on a great show, rearing up an fanning their wings. We took a couple of very peaceful walks. We stopped by the Wining Butcher on the way up and Nadia's on the way back.
It doesn't get much better. :)

I took the week starting Labor day weekend off last year and spent the whole week at the lake. I couldn't believe how MUCH less boat traffic there was for the entire week than just the week before. We had many sunny, crisp, glass-calm days. It was wonderful.

DO NOT COME UP!!
Its very cold and horrible, nothing to see and we're draining the lake Saturday to clean it for the ice fishing derby!
I went out for a sail yesterday and I saw all these long slimy green and purple thingies jumping out of the water every 10 feet or so...very unfriendly waters out there this week:eek: .

Some of us like more wind... in fact a lot more wind. It takes a lot of wind to make a ride on my boat... exciting.
I like the warm weather, but I love the wind 20+ is just right. Kinda separates the real boaters form the wimps, don't you think?

I'll be there in a week from Monday :D
quotes from the winni water taxi thread
No, I don't need a taxi :) An associate of mine was visiting friends at their Winnipesaukee island home, mid-August, and missed an important meeting. The excuse given to me was the water taxi had not arrived after a 3+ hour wait.
I happened to mention this excuse to a co-worker last week who told me there were no taxis operating on Lake Winnipesaukee this past summer. I searched the Winni Forum and bumped this old thread to see if any new business had popped up that I was not aware of.
By the way, this same co-worker said, "If they own a house on an island, they own a boat. They certainly don't swim to the island." I'm starting to think the water taxi excuse isn't holding water.
Using the forum to bust a co-worker. I think that might be against forum policy?
If anyone asks - no that wasn't me at the lake tomorrow ;)

In a friendly manner: Because I do my sailing in the Virgin Islands, we seperate the men from the boys after 30 knots ... 14 foot seas are interesting and after that we head for "the hurricane hole ! " we don't even think about reefing until we see 20 knots ,,,,remember the basic rule of reefing : if you think its time to reef ,you are already 15 minutes late , if you are considering reefing more ,,then you are also way late ,,When the word reef enters your brain for the first time ,,that is the time !
then there is my brother ,who sailed his new pearson back from N.Y. and ran into the only hurricane in 5 years off point judith ,so I think he could add a few interesting words here also , but he did the right thing ! "please haul her out ....NOW !

Obviously you do not own a business in the lakes region. ;)
We will be back! . . . but just to pick up the boat.

I will be up this evening for the weekend, trying to get in as many weekends as possible before i have to close up the camp, and holding the boat in the water to the last possible day that we pull the moorings. I can't believe it has come and gone, the summer that is, already. I will try to have a major accident on 93 before the tolls, obviously with no one getting hurt but causing a 36 hour backup going north, will this work?

When I talk to my sailing buddies, it's always too calm or too windy.

I'm not sure, but I think this weekend is the last weekend that my prime/baked stuff is available at Sandy Point. Am I right?? :)

I thought Columbus Day Weekend was their last weekend open, I could be wrong on that though. Their phone # is (603) 875-6001. Hope you don't miss them! BTW, have you tried their bacon-wrapped scallop appetizer? Delicious, and I haven't been able to duplicate the taste in several years of trying..........

I prefer to push the throttles till I get the desired amount of wind:D :D. Saw a video of the lake today between 2:30 and 3:30 pm near Moultonboro and the water had that glassy look but looked like 65mph winds that slowed to about 30mph near the end:rolleye2:.

Stop encouraging them, or more will come! :D
I was thinking the same thing about 8 pm last night when me and the boy went swimming (yep, really). What an absolutely beautiful night it was, warm, calm, and a big ol' full moon.

Spent most of the morning on the water, well technically I still am on the water, just stopped into my friends shop(has a dock) and soon going to head home. Unfortunately I can't escape the real world all day, but if I could I would be on the Lake, its awesome today. ;)

This morning was certainly as gorgeous as WBB claims. I rode our jetski in from the island this morning to retire it for the season and almost "forgot" my way back to the dock. Sunny, 83 degrees, flat calm and like a ghost town.
I could not believe how low the water was on our dock. I had to lift the bow and push it off the lift into the water as it was completely out.

I too was on my Jetski all afternoon. What a glorious day with temps about 90 and the water still in the high 60's.I was suprized to find more than a few boats out there on a Wednesday in late September.Saw Watermark bringing an excavater to an island with the Mount cruising by.Great day to sail with steady 10-15 mph winds.I was the only at Timber Island for an hour or so.

I saw this as well, they were doing 2 septic systems on Mark. One on either side of us. As I was leaving the island I passed two pwc in the broads right after the barge went by.

Made the final trip last week and now the boat and jetski are snug for the winter! Great weather had the lake almost to myself...
Wicked thunder storm on Thursday morning, the cabin shook! From what I understand there were several homes hit by lightning.

Just checked out the long-range forecast for the weekend...Saturday, clear, high 70s; Saturday few showers, near 70; Monday clear, mid 60s. Would love to get three more days on the Big Lake. Wonder how crowded it'll be?

Too bad you do not have the Mets to take your mind off things for October at least. Sorry had to do it
