What is it?? :)I can't tell you how it got its name, but it is indeed a hole in the wall. The wall is Long Island and the string of islands that stretch south (Little Bear, Cow and Little Birch). From the east, there are only four ways to get through the "wall", over to the rest of the lake. 1) Long Island Bridge 2) the fairly large passage between Long Island and Little Bear (home to the contested East Cove rafting spot) 3) Between Little Bear and Cow (The hole in the wall) and 4) Barber Pole.

The hole in the wall is narrow and shallow. It is a fairly long no-wake zone. On the north side of the passage, there is a house porch with sign that says "Hole in the Wall". In the spring, the salmon fishing are great on both sides of the wall.

It is not a good idea to attempt to drive through the Hole-In-The-Wall,
unless your vehicle is amphibious.... :D :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

The Hole in the wall is actually between Little Bear and Devens Island. Devens Island is a small Island that sits between Little Bear and Cow Island. The side of Devens by Little Bear is navigable and called Hole in the Wall. The side of Devens near Cow is non-navigable. I guess Hole in the wall is a term conjured up to reflect the size of the passage between a "wall" of Islands? That's my best guess.

I was always told that the name came from the fact that as you travel the broads as you look East through Sandy Island and the end of Long Island you catch a glimpse of a "Hole In The Wall" of what appears to be mainland but are really islands. Would like to know for sure myself how the name came about.

The camp that is in the Hole in the Wall was built by Robert Howe (my father in law) about 1958. I had the pleasure of spending about 20 years of summers there, after he passed away the camp was sold. He created the hole in the wall sign to let boaters know where they were, I have alot of great memories from there, and I know the family misses it very much. Boaters that are familiar with the area and that have been around for over 15 years or so will remember that coming through the hole in the wall on a nice weekend day was always an experience because we were always partying on that great dock. Thank you Bob.

I met the guy who owns it now. As I recall he is from Hawaii and also has a place in Connecticut. He seemed very nice. He is planning to do some work on it.
