Minge Cove? Is it "Ming" or "Minj" ???Both "Minj" and "Minj-ee" appear to be correct. Many of our neighbors pronounce it one way and others pronounce it the other way. I believe many years ago the common pronunciation was "Minj-ee", but the more common pronunciation now is "Minj". We pronounce it "Minj".

http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopost/data/531/medium/20scananimalrocks.jpg Yep, they spelled it wrong on that postcard!

By the way, those "Animal Rocks" now have a very large new house behind them, and few of the trees in the photo are still there.

We overheard a woman expounding to her friends how they were going over to "Pegasus Bay". I believe she meant Paugus unless there is a Pegasus Bay I don't know of.

My mother-in-law, who messes up the name of everything, wanted to know if I could take her for a ride through "Sally's guts". Once I was able to stop laughing and get off the floor, I took her.

I've heard several "weekend visitors" call it that. Methinks they are reading the signs to fast. Wonder how they every get past Winnipesaukee?

All you have to do is say "The Lake" and that gets you by.

In fact, I think everyone should capitalize "Lake" in their posts.....show a little respect.....ya know like Mom and Dad.

DRH: I thought you'd get a kick out of this. I was at an art place today and was looking at a map originally produced in 1901 and updated in 1911 and the spelling was.....yup, you guessed it.....Midge Cove!

:D McDNice find, McD! I think I have some history of Minge Cove somewhere around here. I'll try to locate it and see how far back it goes. Until your discovery today, the only place I'd ever seen it called "Midge Cove" was on your postcard.

I think if we capitalize "lake" we should just go ahead and capitalize "the" too. As in, "The Lake is my favorite place".

I just tried pronouncing "Midge" out loud—then dropped the M and pronounced "idge".

The difference is slight, but there seems to be a nasal "n" suggested in Midge. I wonder if the original name was Midge, but when spoken, the spelling got corrupted? (Like Mumbai from Bombay, and Beiping from Peiping).
