Does anyone do geocaching around here?
Do you have website for it? Or is there group who's into it?
I'm interested in it and thought it might be a neat way to teach my son about geography/coordinates. He's really into maps, using a compass, etc. - very cool. I'd like to make it more interesting for him...
Thanks!

Check out this site: www.geocaching.com. There are many many many caches in the lakes region. You can search by area easily. Also, search for St. John's on the Lake at this site and you'll get the coordinates for a cache I placed last fall. There are some travel bugs waiting to start their journey there.... Great activity for the whole family.
But don't tell the muggles.
We are avid cachers and have been pleased with the variety in the lakes region. We have placed 5 caches in the Moultonboro, Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro area. There are approximately a dozen on the Castle property. Lots of areas to make short hikes. There are four caches on Winni's islands. Regarding groups, there are many cachers in the lakes region. Several months ago they had a group geo-event to honor the passing of a fellow geocacher. It was held at Gilligans in Moultonboro. There is also an even larger group in the Concord area. If you go on the website geocaching.com, they usually list upcoming geo-events. Go to one and meet some nice folks who have a common hobby.

Contact Kellie Troendle at Alton Parks and Rec...875-0109. they have set up some "caches" (pronounced ca-shay, if you didn't already know:) ). She can give you some info on local items here in Alton.
I never had time to Geocache in the lakes region, there's alway something else to do. Maybe I'll give it a try. I have three geocaches along the Nashua River in southern NH.
BTW the English pronounciation of cache like "cash" as in money and the plural like "cash-es" are accepted as well.
I always wondered if the cops ever turn up when someone is seen heading into the woods, etc., with an item/package, digging a hole/hiding something, and emerging without the item they had...
with all the hoopla that took place in boston when those kids were planting advertising materials here and there, it seems to me somebody is going to see "terrorism" if they observe this activity - and call in the authorities...
We had a "situation" with the police in Bristol RI. We were at a cache site looking without success for the cache and a police car blocked our car from backing out of the area. He held us for about twenty minutes while he ran our licenses for warrants. He had never heard of geocaching and wouldn't let us go without checking us out. He said we weren't doing anything illegal, not trespassing but that we looked suspicious. Once we were cleared we explained the geocaching concept, gave him the website. He was excited about trying it himself. We never did find that particular cache, we will be back.

We were wondering if it was permitted to put a geocache container on Rattlesnake Island. We have friends there and visit every summer. I looked online and noticed that there were none there yet. What are the rules for putting a geocache on a private island. Could there be stipulations that you would have to own a cottage or be an invited guest of a cottage owner in order to search for it? I wouldn't want to be the cause of people trying to get on the island when they are not supposed to be there since there is not a public dock. Any ideas?

Ask your friends how happy they would be with the impending influx of boats and people if you were to put a geocache container on their property.
That should answer your query. :D
You can't put a geocache on private land without permission from the landowner. All of rattlesnake is private so you would have to get permission, and that permission would obviously have to include someone placing the cache and people searching for it.
Some of rattlesnake is controlled by conservation trusts, that does not make it public land. Many geocaches are located in conservation land without explicit permission. This seems to be tolerated with conservation land that is publicly owned or readily accessable to the public. Rattlesnake is neither.
