They are becoming quite rare in the state and have been greatly reduced by developmental pressure and getting squished on the roads.
Thanks for any info - Kevin

I have never seen one on Bear Island.
And if my wife ever DOES see one, we will be moving to another island.

I don't know the official name - but they are plentiful in the lakes region...one scared the bee-gee-zus out of me at my waterfront property a few years back - I was about 3 feet off the shoreline pulling rocks and my wife noted a snake swimming along the rocks at the shore - I turned around and the thing darted out of the rocks and wizzed past me! My 4 year old thought is was the funniest thing she'd seen - her daddy running across the top of the water - and screaming - I never knew I had such ability to reach the "high c"!!
I have seen them since - but luckily not up close and not sharing the waterfront with me!:D

I saw one in West Alton Marina two years ago. Probably 2.5 - 3 ft long. Really surprised me! Last place I was expecting to see a big black snake. It was sitting on a rock at the edge of the water, and it scooted away when I accidently stepped near it.

My friends have a 5-6 foot black snack that lives in the rock wall around their driveway in MA.
