Hi guys. My family and I are from Pennsylvania and we have been vacationing in Center Harbor on the third week of June for the past twelve years running. Scheduling conflicts at work this year dictate that we come up the first week of June. Question is ... are the black flies generally out of there by then? Thanks in advance.
they are still likely to be bothersome at that time

It all depends on how wet the spring has been. I have seen seasons where they are almost gone by the 3rd week in May. Very unusual, but has happened. I would bring the bug spray with ya though. :)
To get a general idea of when they are around, I think back to the old Yankee adage that says that the black flies are a problem "From Mother's Day to Father's Day". Of course it varies, but it's always somewhere around that period.
The best defense? Dryer sheets. Rub them on you, and if things are really bad, wear a few. Tuck one in your collar, one in each sleeve, etc. You sure look silly, but it does work!

Ladys and Gents. I never heard of the dryer sheet idea but I will sure give them a try. Love the area by the way ... sure wished we lived closer. Thanks for the hospitality everyone. It sure is a little disappointing seeing the development that has been occurring. I was born 25 years too late I suppose.

May I ask, do they care which brand one uses?

We have also been using the dryer sheets and they work great on the black flys.
We have found the Bounce Spring Awakening to work far better than all others, with the Bounce Outdoor Fresh Scent as a back-up. Both are much less expensive than bug spray and work much better than everything else we have tried. We got this information several years ago while camping during Memorial Day Weekend in the White Mountains.
I wonder if Proctor and Gamble are aware of all the uses of these products they market. ;)

I hear that as far as black-flies are concerned, IGA stands for.................
I'm Getting Attacked!! :D
Just Kidding! I know the Bounce brand works best for us and those that told us about it.

Also found out the dryer sheets work for the annoying spiders inside your cruiser or cuddy. Toss some in cupboards and any nooks and crannys. Though I know they are harmless, it was always creepy having the feeling of a spider crawling across my face and waking me up in the middle of the night. Not to mention the kiddoes freeking out when they saw a spider.

I'm going to give the dryer sheets a try this spring on a Maine fishing trip. Hope they work. As for spiders, don't count on them being harmless, lots of them can give you a real bad time.
