Hey IG and DBA,
Great work on the Ice In page! Can you let us know how much ice is on the SW side of the island and on the broad side?
IG's post regarding not being able to get to her camp was surprising. I am assuming we should be all set for this weekend. Am I mistaken?
Thanks again for all of your input!
Hi All interested in ice conditions here at the island....Yes, this means we are living out here (lucky us)! Father Nuke made multiple ATV trips today and conditions are good tight ice. The only thing to watch for are ice rift pieces that have been frozen in a vertical postion. Daylight is important to see any hazards and more cautious speeds allow course revisions more quickly. There are rifts on all sides of the island (happens every year) so just look around. The wind has blown snow into some drifts and left bare patches all over the Broads area and both sides of Rattlesnake.
When walking, caution is even more important (cleats help,too).... Any area can change condition in a few hours time. The ice moves and flexes. That said, the days and nights of cold have produced some good ice....particularly for Derby weekend! Enjoy!
Don't know how many are aware that a bubbler at someone's dock can affect the integrity of ice for a very large distance around the area depending on the direction it's pointed, how often it runs, how deep it is, and the power of the motor. Two coves on the SW side of Rattlesnake have noticebly less ice than "middle" of the lake areas.

Last weekend there was a rift in front of my house that was slushy... I foot broke through the ice for a few inches... I think there was ice below that... The ice further in to the shore looked quite solid. I expect this weekend to be much better with all of the cold we have had.
I probably could have taken a flying leap over the rift... but with one wet foot I was not anxious to try anything more dumb than I had already done!

You lucky Dog, indeed!!
IG,
Father Nuke checked out the ice in front of your house, today. He said it was solid today.
