Every once in a while someone will send an e-mail reminiscing about a certain postcard but I thought this one was special.

Hi - I was browsing the Lake Winnipesaukee web site this afternoon and was very surprised to find a postcard of the Alton Bay Beach with a picture of my Mom (who is now 83) along with her friend and myself and my friend on the beach!! I barely remember when it was taken (I'm 51) and I know I have a copy of it somewhere so it was so nice to see it again!! Thanks!!
pretty cool, huh? McD:cool:

McDude:
That is very interesting. Do you, or the person who responded, know what year the picture was taken? The beach seems much bigger than what is there now. although I suppoe it could be the camera angle.

When I posted the card in 10/2004 (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=4123&si=alton%20bay%20beach%20in%20the%2050s&what=allfields&name=mcdude)I wrote,

Same publisher and photographer.
The "postcard responder" also wrote
My Mom is lying on her back with her arms propping her up so she can see me and my friend playing at the edge of the water.
.....so judging from the photo and the "responder" stating that she is now 51...so let's see.....(I suck at math).... born in 1955 and if...say....5 years old in the photo.....1960?....'61? or so....
I found the original card and there is no postmark.

All together now - "Its a small world after all..."
Did the e-mailer give you hers/his current location?

McDude:
Thanks. I appreciate the clarification on the approximate time. I'm sure the lake was a lot different in 60 or 61.

that's better than cool........ i sometimes love the internet, makes the world smaller, especially in this instance. can you imagine seeing a postcard taken so long ago posted on the internet, recognizing your mom and yourself and others in what could be construed as a "family photograph" that was available to anyone who had the 5 cents or whatever it was back then to purchase the postcard? and send the postcard along to people "back home" with the "i was here, wish you were also" sentiment? i never thought much about the people in the postcards before this.......

Thanks for sharing this very cool story McDude! :D
The beach sure looks a lot nicer in this postcard. Alton has plans on upgrading the beach again soon, right?
Imagine the great book you could put together someday with all the information you have gathered and the personal stories that have been shared with you.
Thank you for your tireless efforts!

RG, Last I heard, contracts had been awarded, and they were waiting for fall and the lower water level to do the work. It will be nice to have the rte 28a side of the bay look as nice (or even better, hopefully) than it does in the Postcards, returning the beach to the grandeur of yesteryear.
McDude was kind enough to allow me to use copies of a couple of his cards showing the beach back when the town was voting on the warrant article to fund the beach reconstruction. there is no doubt in my mind that having those pictures out in the lobby prior to town meeting helped pick up a few votes. And then to have a story like this come about...
Maybe in 20-30 years, some one will be talking about that Laser image document of the newly constructed Alton Bay beach and how their mom and family is in the picture;) . Hey, ya nevah know!
