Digging test pits without a soils engineer will do you no good. A soils engineer understands what soils are what, where the seasonal high water mark is etc. Also the soils engineer is licensed by the state of NH and would do the septic design. They also would have access to the excavation equipment you are asking for. There are lots of sources for excavation equipment so maybe someone here on the forum can provide the name(s) of a few soils engineers.
I know I am in the process of building a new home and have been through the process a while back.
I'm actually a licensed septic designer and professional engineer, so logging the test pits is within my capability. Unfortunately Tuftonboro is not within my normal work radius and therefore I do not have a local contractor that I can call. Again, if anybody has a contact I'd appreciate it.

Dennis Gillum did our test pits along with the installation of our new septic system (Septi-tech- that's another story).Dennis lives in Center Tuftonboro, he's a great guy, very dependable. Also, he's an Aussie with quite a sense of humor. Tell him Robin & Glenn in Pennsylvania say hello. 569-4079 If he can't do it I am sure he could recommend someone else.
