I seem to remember that on the top of Endicott Rock there was the statue something, last time I went through the channel, and in photos on this fourm I didn't see it, anyone know what happened to it?

There used to be a statue of an Indian (Native American) on top of the monument. Over the years it was subject to vandalism and, I believe, one theft. The statue has been removed since and I think is now on display somewhere in Laconia.

When I was lifeguarding at the Weirs we used to tell the little kids to form a circle and walk around the monument four times asking Chief Chocura what he sees from on top of the monument. We told them if they did it right then the statue would say, "Nothing!"

The kids would dutifully march around the monument asking the chief what he saw and of course he said... nothing.

We had a blast with all those kids. They were great.

That's right it was an Indian! (Native American) I remember as a kid my father telling me about Endicott Rock when we went past it and I never "got" why if it was an explorer who "discovered" it and it was named for a Governor why there was an Indian on it! :emb:

It is supposedly on display at the public library in Laconia. The Weirs Action Committee has recently replaced the statue. Follow the link below for photos and more information.
