I know there are several of you here who have island cottages (without bridges to the mainland). My wife and I were wondering if there were any books out there specifically about island living - perhaps even specifically about island living on Winnipesaukee.
Having boated on the lake since I was 5, I've have always been curious about what "people do" who summer or weekend on the islands. What they do for electricity, sewage, cable, shopping, parking, etc.
I've searched and read the threads, but was curious about "the lifestyle" of islanders. Any help on books or feedback would be appreciated.

There is a book about our island called "Bear Island Reflections". It covers the history and folklore of the island as well as daily island life in the early days and today. You can find more info at www.bearisland.org
The $25 cost of the book goes to the Bear Island Conservation Association.
You can stop by the mail dock at 11:30 AM any day but Sunday and buy a copy, or send me a pm for other arraignments.
To answer some of your specific questions we have electricity and phone and next summer we will have cable. Most islanders use valet service or have a slip at local marinas. We have a convenience store at Y Landing Marina or go to the Center Harbor public docks and walk up the hill to the grocery store, hardware etc. Sewage we just pump into the lake (just kidding).

My family and I have had an island home for over thirty years.
If you'd like to know more about island living email me at jkjoshuatree@mac.com and I'd be happy to answer your questions.
It's definitely a unique experience (but completely different from mainland living).
I actually wrote an article on it and I'm waiting for it to be published.
Talk to you soon.

Hi all!
There was a poster in the Moultonborough Post Office inviting interested people to a talk on the history of Winnipesaukee's islands. I think that it was to happen in the Congregational Church in Center Harbor on Saturday evening at 7 PM.
I'll check on the details and get back.

JK - when and where is the article being published? Can't wait to read it and see how it compares to my own life-long island experience.

...the problem with being an unpublished writer is obviously getting published.
I haven't had any nibbles on the "Island Life" article but a story I wrote about the Sophie C was just accepted by a magazine and will be published in their spring issue-barring they don't change their minds and like the finished product.
