Say, I was sitting out on Bear the other day and heard an amazing LOUD screaming bird call at midday - AWWWWK AWWWK AWWWK - answered by another bird nearby. It was not a gull, jay, screech owl or somebody's angry mother-in-law. Could it have been a conversation between eagles? Thanks.

If your bird was LOUD, it was reported in the Rochester Times (print) last week. Out of the blue, an Amazon parrot landed on a stranger's shoulder there. They are looking for the owner.

It would be very unusual for two parrots to appear in one place, so your bird was probably in flight when you heard it. They aren't just loud, they're extremely loud.

Peechee - from your description of the sound, it sounds more like Ricah, my Blue and Gold Macaw, than the crows and ravens in my back yard. Givia immer is correct in the statement that Parrots (and Macaws) are not just LOUD --- they are EXTREMELY LOUD! :eek:

Sometimes on summer nights when we return home from work quite late in the evening, Ricah will get so excited that somebody's home, and if the windows are open I know that my neighbor on the other side of the woods must often wonder what in the world is going on in my house! :eek2: It's a wonder he's never called the police to report screaming coming from our direction! :laugh:

Seriously though, is it possible that a house in the area is home to a large exotic bird or two?

Oh! And a Post-Script to GoodSk8's reference to my other thread ... I am now of the firm belief that the sounds I hear outside my house are indeed Ravens. Thanks to ALL who helped me identify the mysterious cries!

Thanks for the insight, folks...this screeching AWK-ing was heard out on one of the Lake Winni islands coming from a heavily forested area. And was answered by another screecher. Maybe I shall consult Audobon? Hope the parrots are all well out there....I have cockatiels and parakeets.:patriot:

Crows can be very loud and it almost sounds like it could possibly be a pair? Then again most folks know what they sound like. Regardless if close by they sure do disturb the peace and quiet.
