This morning we have been treated to an unusual bird sighting out in front of our house. After checking with "Sibley's" and "Peterson's", we discovered this small water bird was a Red-necked Phalarope. It is probably migrating north to the upper regions of Canada but stopped off at Winni for a snack. What a great Mother's Day gift, a new bird to add to my lifetime list!

Funny, about two weeks ago, I saw a water bird that was too small to be a loon—plus it had a very long, rust-colored neck.

My Audubon Field Guide told me it's a red-necked grebe. I added that bird to my lifetime list. It's another Canada/Alaska bird -- (Credit to Audubon Field Guide) "...more rarely to Quebec and New Hampshire" (!)

Now you've seen a red-necked phalarope, and added it to a lifetime list!

This has something to do with Global Warming, I'm sure of it!

Edited to add: Global Warming has birds migrating earlier, nesting earlier, and nesting further north for a cooler climate, worldwide. Also apologies to comedian Jeff Foxworthy.

(Phalarope first,
Grebe, second).

Wow! You both are lucky to have spotted these birds!
Thanks for sharing your bird news. :coolsm:

Yesterday, while not unusual to see them here, hundreds of swallows must have migrated in and were flying low over the lake. (Unfortunately I don’t think they all got out of the way of our boat.) It was pretty neat to see. Hopefully they will stick around and gobble up lots of bugs.

The only problem we have with the swallows is when our sailboat is on its mooring, they sit on the mast spreaders and make a mess on the deck!
