View Full Version : Who declares "Ice Out"?
This is my first winter back in the Lakes Region in about 30 years (ouch  ) and I know that the official Ice Out date is determined by the ports that the Mt. Washington travels to but who makes the announcement ... and how?

The official date and time of "Ice-Out" is determined by the Lakes Region Association. Someone from LCI flys over the lake. I forget who does it, but it has been the same person since just about December of 1903.
40 Degrees now!! Just about time to go swimming!

Wow, same person since "1903" that would make that person 101 years old if they started at birth. ;)

When Ice-Out is close Dave Emerson of Emerson Aviation makes frequent flights over the lake to determine as close as he can the exact time the Mount's path is open. Check this Citizen article for more information:

Although Dave communicates directly with some of the media the Lakes Region Association has been the major distributor of the announcement for many years by sending out press releases and other notifications (like to this site). Soon after it is announced on radio stations and newpapers throughout the region. It is also announced on this site so just keep checking here.
Keep in mind that the calling of Ice-Out is totally unscientific and is just for fun and tradition.

It would make them 100. The 100th anniversary at Kittyhawk, NC was this past December. ;)

In case we don't remember our actual guess for ice out, is it posted somewhere? I think I guessed around the 25th of April.
