On the 31st of March, check out Waterville Valley. The lift tickets will be a dollar that day. Usually the dollar day falls on April 1, but this year, that day falls on a Saturday. :)

We went up to Bretton Woods yesterday. They had only 2 trails open and wanted to charge us $ 64.00 per lift ticket. This has to be the worse ski season ever. Where is the Snow?

If you listen to the radio stations the conditions are great. I should have just watched my local TV station for Ski Conditions, where you can view the conditions.

Perhaps checking a post or two on this site for a Cam view and a pricing schedule would have been advantageous?

Unfortunately PBLG,no ski area is going to tell you their skiing stinks.I think most people understand that.Did you think with the weather we have been having that it would be different than what you discovered? As far as trail count, same thing for all ski areas. BW is showing about 16-18 trails. Those are trail segments and you only need to check their website and the trailmap page shows what IS open so there should be no surprize there. It has to get better soon cuz I'm leaving to ski out west next week.Works every time!

Actually, I got that information out of a reservations person at Waterville Valley last week. She basically told me the skiing stunk, so we went to Sunday River instead - where conditions were pretty good there, given the warm weather. I'll be sure to get up to Waterville Valley for a weekend once conditions improve, to show my appreciation for their honesty.

We drove up to Waterville to go skiing today. On the positive side, they were discounting the tickets $5...hmmm. There was very limited terrain open and the conditions were very scratchy. The loose snow was skied off by mid day and it was glaze ice thereafter. They are talking about 6" of snow later in the week. There were very light crowds (no real lift lines), but the congestion on the trails was pretty bad. I would wait until they get more terrain open before venturing up there.

Jetskier:

Thanks for the heads up. Your description is pretty much what I expected. I agree that it doesn't make much sense to go skiing in New England until there is another storm. I wouldn't want to be a business catering to the outdoor snow sports this year.

At least one bear is still out and about here in Waterville Valley. Some large tracks showing paw prints and claws were very easy to follow in the heavy wet snow, just 1/2" deep, on a cross-country ski trail, yesterday. Usually, most years, the black bears around these here woods, take to hibernating on about December 7, Pearl Harbor Day, but not this year.

Are they staying up so's they go do the terrific Gunstock night-tubing runs, under the lights, or what?

So, what do war fighting reports and ski condition reports have in common? The reporters can be creative with their timeliness and totally leave out certain hot words like 'civil war' and 'rain.' Rain is called the "r-word" and is definately not what people want to hear/read on a snow condition report. It's a competative business and probably all the large ski areas practice creative reporting except maybe state owned Cannon Mountain.
Not a mention of the r-word on Belknap County owned Gunstock Mountain's website, even though Monday's weather was a very r-word type of a day.
At 3:50am, the Waterville Valley temperature is now a rainy 39 degrees according to my thermometer, and that obviously is very warm for Jan 2. ....anyone for waterskiing!

We thought about heading to Cannon Mountain today,. to only check the web site to find out they where closed for the day. It looks like we are going to have to head out West or to Canada if I want to ski this year :(

Right on both counts.I have a place at Cannon and it was not a pretty overnight or Monday.First, plenty of ice built up overnight with winds blowing 50 - 60 mph.I thought the roof of my house was gonna blow off!Interesting ice build up on my car.Only one side had ice and the other had none from the direction of the wind. It's a pretty sad situation this year and the forecast doesn't look any different.Headed to British Columbia Thursday where the website says there is 10 ft(yes ten feet) of settled snowpack at the lodge.Lucky me.

I just checked the weather report and it is going to be about 50 through the weekend up there. It is going to be 60 in Boston on Saturday.

I hate to think that Al Gore got something right:laugh:

Bad news for skiing so far!

Unfourtanetly, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the smaller ski areas close for the weekend, given what is headed their way this week. Pray for snow and cold!!! This is getting ridiculus.

74 Degrees at SkiBradford at Haverhill, MASS where there is NO SNOW on ANY SLOPES!!! :emb: Toughest for the southern ski areas - nothing down here - not even cold enough temps at night to make the stuff!
