Ice Report - Saturday 4/10

Cruised (hover) over much of the Moultonborough Bay area and found the ice in the center to be still pretty solid. The ice within 300 feet of the shores is now either water, or somewhat slushy in the form of straw-like ice crystals. I believe there will be much open water along the shores over the next week, but there will likely be large sheets of ice for at least the next week and a half to two weeks.

In looking at the past few years ice outs, coupled with the water temps, ice out always seems to happen at about 39 degrees. If you look at the description of the lake "flip", it too starts happening at 39 degrees. Given the water temp is now posted at 39, shouldn't be long....

[Paugus Bay Resident]

Ice is starting to break up on Paugus Bay. There is quite a bit of open water well offshore, and large sheets of ice are starting to dirft shoreward. I'd guess in a week to 10 days, it shoud be pretty much open.

Judging by the thickness of what's still out in some of the open water, we can only hope that there's not too much wind in the next week, moving these big sheets around and raising havoc with the shoreline/docks!

OK folks got a close up look at the ice in Meredith, alas I could no longer wait and I put my boat in to do a little fishing. Ice is not solid at all, it's ready to break up, but will need some wave action to get it going. There is little to no soild ice left, it's all poris and very flimsy. I ventured to give the boat a bit of throttle to create some waves next to the ice and the wave action broke up about the leading three feet of ice as you could see my waves moving the ice up and down. It's on average about 3" thick and like I said pretty much ready to go, all we need is a good windy day to get the water stirred up. :)

This week may very well clear much of the lake surface of ice.

Be very careful out there as there is a TON of crap in the water left over from this winter's activities on the ice.

A large area of ice just passed our dock in Wentworth Cove by the GI bridge. Appears to be 5-8" thick. Could do our dock some serious damage if the wind picks up. Wiped out 6 posts last year.

What are the names of each of those areas if one is Wentworth Cove what is the other called?

The Universal Atlas of Southern NH and the Lakes Region shows Wentworth Cove Road on the left just before you get to the island bridge, so it should be the first cove north before Riley's Point. The maps that I have do not show a Wentworth Cove on them.
There were quite a few of McDude’s postcards, which showed coves or points that were not on any map either. I was hoping that someone would know about those. There must be some maps that have this information on them.
While looking around I discovered that Treasure Island is also called Red Head Island.

The Bizer map shows Wentworth Cove immediately north-west of the G. I. bridge.

The south-east side of the cove is named 'No rafting area'. Just kidding, it seems to be unnamed, according to the Bizer map. I don't have my old green map (the Duncan map) around to cross check.

So does anyone know what those two areas are called? Where is Wentworth Cove?
Wentworth cove is the smaller cove on the northwest (Wiers)side of the Governors Island bridge. SS
