Sally's gut

Have been through many times on smaller boats. Does anyone know what depth it is? My draft is 41" so I'm not sure if that will work. If anyone has any knowledge I would appreciate it, thinking if I have a shot would be now with a full lake.

My boat has a 39" draft. I've been through there during all seasons, and never had an issue. Obviously you need to honor the markers, and generally need to stay roughly in the middle of the channel, although there is ample width for boats to pass one another through most of the "gut". As you enter/exit on the northeast side, there are stone walls that confine the entrance to a very narrow passage. In that location, there is only enough room for one boat, and you need to stay dead center in the passageway, particularly if you have twin outdrives (as I do). However, if you stay in the middle there, you should be fine.

I remember the mechanic at Meredith Marina in the 80s telling me, when I was Leary about my first trip, that he took a large (I think he said 48’) ChrisCraft Constellation thru Sally’ Gut with no problem.

I'd agree with the posts above- most importantly stay in the middle. Hard to do with boats coming the other way. If you have sterndrives or outboards, you can trim up a bit- but obviously inboards you might get in trouble if you get close to the edge. Should be little to no traffic if you are looking to do it soon! It's a nice ride.

Be wary of a single rock that is hiding just below the surface (and has my paint on it) about 6 feet out from the shoreline on your starboard side just as you enter the gut travelling west. At some point during the year someone typically marks it with a Clorox jug or something...but not always. I'd stay a tad left of center when entering from the eastern side. This is also the narrowest part of the channel.

It is fine for most boats. I have taken a 34 foot boat with twin inboards through without a problem. You just need to pay attention on the east end where it gets a little tight. There are markers but you can see the rocks just beneath the surface.

I know someone who, back in the late 1950's and early 60's, used to water ski through Sally's Gut. Their family owned land that bordered Sally's.

In my mind I can almost envision a jet ski - short rope - accomplished water skier going through the gut. A boat? Even small >> That must have been something to see.
