Here's some information hot off the press on the 2006 Alton Bay Winter Carnival, back to the Sunday of President's Day Weekend.

We will be there! I'm glad the event is scheduled for Presidents' Day weekend since it coincides with our trip up from NJ. GTXRider may be watching the Daytona 500 instead, but the rest of us will be on the ice. Already bought the Yaktraks.

Is Island Sib getting the Bed Race Team organized?

Now that the holidays will soon be packed away we can concentrate on the important things!!! Winter Fun!!
For two years I have watched the Bed Race at Alton Bay Winter Carnival and wanted to enter.
With the help of enthusiastic forum members we could put together a team and who knows either win or just have a great time trying to.
So let's see who is up to this challenge.

It’s been twenty years since they’ve been used. (They’ll be going out in style! )

Great Idea!
Would you like to be a pusher or do you have a small family member who could be a rider...
Or you could cheer us on.

Island Sib:
I have attended the fest for the last few years and the bed race has always looked like fun! I have no idea how to attach skiis to a bed but I could certainly help push! If DRH and Island Girl are pushing too, who is going to take photos? ......and we need a theme! (which hopefully will have nothing to do with 'chunky-dunking'). We should study the entries of the other teams! The Alton Bay Christian Conference Center is the team to beat. They use only a little baby crib for their bed! Let's see if I can find a photo....

Here's one that DRH took
http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopost/data/15030/medium/11Bed_Race_3.jpg

and here's the Sunset Lake Snoozers....they have a weird bed....looks like a chaise lounge to me!

Well I can volunteer to mush .... errr ... push. We do need a theme though. Forum friends frantically force futon to furious fleetness. I don't know how this might be expressed in a bed design though. ;)

IslandSib

Thanks for volunteering as a musher ...was worried.
Most of the respondents have witnessed the successful win of the "crib"
and we have lookouts seeking an old one somone would be willing to part with.
Keep the ideas coming for a theme!;)

I just found an old crib up in my attic. It is all there spring and mattress may need minor hardware.Would be willing to donate to the cause.Don't want to push or ride but would like to watch.Maybe you can get Misty Blue to ride.I wiil not be able to get the crib to N.H. until the weekend of Jan.14-15.(I'm all tied up doing a car show in Boston World of Wheels)

How about putting a dust ruffle around your snowmobile and making it look like a bed? :rolleye2: Don't ask how I know about dust ruffles!

Since I am planning to be there that weekend I may have to help push the snowmobile no make that a bed.

Bob - I will have the honor of assembling the crib and installing the skis, so you can drop it off at my house in West Alton. If you'd like to send me an email I'll give you the directions.

Thanks again!

Have we thought about how the "bed/sled" will get from West Alton to Alton Bay? Will we need a pick-up truck or can it be towed by snowmobiles?

BroadHopper
12-31-2005, 12:54 PM
And two pairs of skis. Do you think we can get all the forum members into this one??????? Second thought how are we to push this monster. Once we get it going, how are we going to stop.

What a ride!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? :D

gtxrider
12-31-2005, 12:54 PM
If the Babes are planning to do the RADAR RUN they can tow the bed/sled down.

I have a small pickup trunk if needed. I think a crib will fit in the back or it can be lashed to the roof of the cap.

Have we thought about how the "bed/sled" will get from West Alton to Alton Bay?

Why not put it on an available eastbound train on the historic Lakeshore Railroad? The West Alton station should be just about perfect!;)

I thought about towing it by sled, but that's a pretty long way to tow it. Wouldn't want it to shake apart before we even get it to the starting line! But if the frozen lake is fairly smooth then, towing is an option. Transporting it in the back of a pickup truck would probably be the easiest way to get it there.

Behind the scenes,DRH:cool: has given a big hand to coordinating emails from all the forum members who are lending a hand, crib, pickup truck.
Now, we need costume and theme ideas...remember a musher must be able to move ...and it is pretty nippy out there at that time of year.
Somehow it should tie to forum...

gtxrider and I will be there with our 17 year old nephew that weekend. He is fast on his feet and would make an excellent musher. We were with him today and he seemed to be agreeable. I saw him run the length of Michie stadium at West Point, return the 100 yards and then proceed to run up the visitors' stands, then turned around and run up the home team side all the way to the press box. The groundskeepers there were laughing hysterically at this kid's speed. Looked like a scene from Forrest Gump! I think he'd be an excellent member of the team. Wish I had that much energy.

Spanky, I've been thinking how much fun such a video might be, but I'm not sure how we could mount the camera so it would get everyone in the shot. If you look at the picture that McDude posted a few days ago of the winning crib in the 2005 race, that's pretty much what our entry will look like. If the camera were mounted on the front of the crib somehow, unless it had a "fisheye" lens I don't think it would see the two "mushers" in front. But I'm open to ideas, so if anyone can think of a way a camera could be set up on the crib so it would get all 5 idiots .. er .. contestants in the video, please let us know!

Maybe we could put an extension on the front of the crib and mount the camera on that.
I have been thinking of cheep easy ways to beef up the crib.We may be able to use automotive stainless steel hose clamps to hold the spring to the frame and maybe even the frame pieces together.Don we can talk about this when I drop of the crib.

So long as that other "gear" isn't the infamous thong :D If I were to wear one I'm sure it would so incapacitate the other teams though vomitting or giggling and outright snorting that it would be banned on the spot as an unfair advantage. However we might want to think about flying a winni.com pennant from the crib.

EDIT: It just occurred to me that we could dress the mushers up in something like hospital/surgeon/operating room clothing. Perhaps a cheapo white overall from Home Depot would be close enough ? They could be staff rushing the newborn in the crib to the ... Just a thought :)

As for cameras and video from the "crib of catastrophe" ... HA ! ... I say we lend some to our competitors ! That way we'll have multiple views with all of the team in them, even if it's just shots of as... hmmm ... "butts" and elbows, as we pull from the pack. Which reminds me, like mcdude, if we have younger, more fleet of foot, mushers that want in, I'll happily step aside. :coolsm:

As to names ; we have so far ForumFest Mushers and Cradle Robbers. Any other ideas ? Might I suggest Crib Crashers as a takeoff on the above.

Additionally we'll be in the neighborhood on Sat as well as Sun so if there's any last minute items that need a helping hand let me know.

The skis are set to go! I was very surprised to find them caked with rust, thank goodness I’m handy with a Dremel. (Don’t try this with your good skis!) After the rust removal I buffed out the big scratches and applied some wax called Waxagra. (Found it at Play it Again Sports.) The directions say: For long lasting, slick lubrication, apply a thin layer of wax to a warm base. Allow to dry 2-3 minutes and buff in with something soft and sexy! :D
(Now I need new lingerie!)
Today, when I should have been taking care of other business, I took an old plastic sled, packed down the hill and tried it out. I checked HD today and found some painting type overalls (X-LRG, fits people 5'7" to 6'2") for $8. For $10 you can get the "professional" suit which is made of the same lightweight white cloth but has a hood. Sorta looks like clean room garb. Yup, always trying to find the legal (I yeild to UTS's rulings) but unfair advantage. So it goes in racing ! Truely though I do want to be able to not slip and fall in front of my fellow mushers. To that end I think any added traction would be a "safety" device. Yeah .... that's the ticket ... safety, not competitive advantage, but safety. :D

Thanks to Sunset Bob and Donna, the "Crib" has arrived at the secret West Alton location. It will now receive "enhancements" including a jet engine, flame throwers, machine guns and surface to surface missiles . . . no, no, no . . . too many "Bond" movies!!! How about reenforcements, a set of fast skis, a face lift and many embellishments which will dazzle and amaze the competition. Our secret weapon (Pepper) will so intimidate the other entrants that they will be shaking in their boots! BE AFRAID . . . BE VERY AFRAID!

I've been doing the snowdance down here in NJ all week and as of about an hour ago, we now have about an inch of snow on the ground and the temp. went from 55 earlier today to 29. Hope it heads toward NH. If the lake doesn't freeze, we may have to put the crib on pontoons and attach the old Evinrude 10 hp.

I didn't have my camera with me to snap a photo but we drove through Alton Bay a couple hours ago and the ice actually looks fine. There are many bob houses out there, and a couple camping trailers as well. The recent rain has frozen into a sheer glassy surface, which will make "mushing" a bit of a challenge unless we get some snow before the "Big Race"!

I talked to a friend who has a bob house on the bay, right in the middle of the pack of bob houses, and he said that Monday there was 9 inches of ice. I would still be using extreme caution on the ice, and probably not want to be the first one to go onto a certain area. there are bobhouses out around the shallow area by Sandy point, and I saw some bob houses over by peggy's cove.

Now team we must go into training...
Not sure what it is we should do...but I will contemplate.

OK, team- I have consulted with exercise guru "Jane Fond-of-you" on a training video for the mushers. Since staying vertical is most important, the exercises are done while holding on to a "crib substitute".

Everyone- assume the position: lean forward into your "crib substitute" and slowly move your feet back and forth like a duck paddling on a calm lake. Feel the rhythm? Notice how smooth the movement is. Keep paddling. Got your rhythm?

OK- now imagine you are that duck and a GFBL boat is bearing down on you at 60mph. That's right, pick up your speed. Faster! Faster! Go, go, go . . .feel the burn . . . move your duck tail before you're duck soup!!!!!

Later, once your heart rate comes back into the normal range, go to Exercise #2 - grasp glass : bend elbow : consume contents : straighten elbow : refill. Repeat as necessary.:liplick:

Hope these exercises help the cause!:D

The bold faced portion of Exercise 1 seems to be missing one important part. There is a mantra that should be repeated by the mushers if that situation were to occur: The mantra has its roots steeped heavily in U. S. Naval tradition, and goes like this: DIVE !!!! DIVE !!!! DIVE !!!! .

In fact, upon further reflection, and Mee-n-Mac (Mac portion thereof) can perhaps verify this, it may well be that the video has the exercises in the wrong order, and Exercise 2 should actually be Exercise 1 followed by the former Exercise 1 which would now become Exercise 2, which can then be followed by a joyous refrain of the new Exercise 1, which to the joy of all involved becomes the happily repeated chorus, repeating thish chorus thingee often but not driving 'cause you shouldn't exercise after that much driving, and I musht have anudda chorus tanite jusht to get in shape...

I was wondering though if we should preface this with a prayer to "The Great Spirit" for cold and snow at least for a short period of time.
Remember though do this in private or others may reap violence on you.

Quilt Lady
01-20-2006, 09:11 AM
Sorry, Upthesaukee, but that is the correct order for the training exercises. The object is to stay vertical. If you do Exercise #2 before Exercise #1, you will be forced to do Exercise #3 . . .which is trying to do push-ups while face down on the ice. Great workout for the shoulders but not good for forward motion. Plus you would then force your team mates into Exercise #4 . . the dead weight drag as they pull you off of the ice. I don't want to think about what happens next.:rolleye1:

I am getting emails from AANH, and the ice has not been thick enough for the gentleman who plows the runway to do so and feel safe about it. He is planning to maintain the runway again this year, but only with acceptable ice conditions (thickness and condition). I believe he is the same person who contacts the FAA about being "airport manager", whereas the AANH simply hosts the fly - in. All parties are hopeful that the fly-in will occur this year. My mother-in-law had knee replacement surgery on Monday. While we were waiting, I was telling her about Alton Bay’s Winter Festival and the bed race. Last night we went for a visit. She is on pain medicine and was a bit lOoPy. She looked at me serious as could be and asked if I knew anything about beds being put on the lake and people racing them. Of course I confirmed the story, but now I regret not toying with her a bit first. Maybe next visit.

IG was concerned about wind resistance by putting it on the end, but on the side it will not be seen because of the mushers. (See crib photo above.)

Tension is high tonight at the "Secret West Alton Location" as we await the arrival of the members of the Design Team- Paint Division. Once we get past this weekend, temps will have highs in the 20's through next Sat, and lows in the mid to upper teens. Should help the ice formation, and thickening. With all due respect to those who would be coming up from NJ, Mass, PA, etc...the amount of people who would be coming to the Winterfest is far smaller than the fishing derby, and we have a little luxury as far as postponing or not. By the way, AANH is still hopeful of having their fly-in, and the "airport manager" is still hopeful of having the "airport open". He just wants to have some thicker ice before he: 1. brings his truck on the ice to plow; and 2. sets in place an action that encourages pilots to land their planes on ice that has to be safe for their weight individually as well as in a group parked on the ice.

Keep happy, and cold, thoughts:) .

I believe your request for a 11 day sail will have to be postponed as the charoit has been sized for one person and only one person. To change it a this late day would cost millions and the tax rates will skyrocket. Alton Parks & Rec Commission met this evening, and it was decided to cancel Winter Fest for 2006. While we have a short term forecast of some cold weather over the next few days, there is a warming trend towards next weekend. With the up and down trend of temps over the past few weeks, and ice conditions being questionable, we do not feel that we would be acting responsibly in putting a fairly large number of people in a concentrated area on the ice. Additionally, with no snow, the ice can be very dangerous walking and we don't want to see injuries from slip and fall accidents on glare ice. In the interest of safety, we feel it is best to cancel the WinterFest for this year.

This winter has dealt a horrible blow to the economy, and I feel so awful for all the businesses who are suffering this year due to the lack of tourism. With the cancellation of the Winterfest as well as the Fishing Derby, things are only going to get worse for all the businesses in the area that rely on weather-related travel and activities. I thank the Lord every day that we made the decision to go seasonal! Undoubtedly this winter would have been crippling for us.

Yup, just as buying new skis, a snowblower or snow tires is instant death to snowfall, DRH's craftsmanship on the WFF crib would just not go unpunished. :( I guess we can now reveal to the world the carbon buckeyball wax and geeko-like footwear that we planned to use ... surely those Christian Conference guys will have figured them out as well (for next year). I guess this gives the mushers time to coagulate into a fine mass of motive muscle ... either that or take a nice nap. :D Perhaps we should petition Alton to have a Summer carnival to include a bed / water walker race ? (see above pics) I can see it now ! A Le Mans style start from Downings docks, once around the gazeebo, detour past the perched beach and first to pass under the bridge to Parker Marine is the winner ! I figure we add pontoons to the skis on the WFF crib, wax them up real good and then for constructing the water walkers we could ... oh what ... yes dear ... OK my medication just arrived so I'll have to continue this later, but you get the idea.

mee....you must share some of that medication....ah hum...err....
Tonight would have been the night I would be heading up to the lake to get ready for the big race! With 40 mph winds (see related thread... http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2928 ) and the cold temps I am so glad I am not heading up tonight or mushing in below zero temps tomorrrow! For those of you still heading upthesaukee, enjoy but BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!! ;) McD

Got this message from the snowmobile club.

2006 Alton Radar Run Canceled! Alton Parks & Recreation has decided to cancel WinterFest for this year... "We are concerned about the condition of the ice, with all the warming and reforming, and the fact there is very little snow cover to provide traction while walking. As a matter of public safety we decided to cancel. :(

In retrospect, I think that Alton Parks & Rec made a really good decision. The ice certainly has its thin spots still out there, and there is very little traction for walking on the ice. And with the temps in the twenty's with a fairly steady breeze, wind chills would be down to the single numbers --- not a good thing for standing around on the open bay.

Ice was still too thin to think about bringing in the planes for the fly in, and with no snow cover over the top of the ice, there would be little or no control for steering the planes.

Hated to see it get cancelled, but life's too short, and there is always next year!!!!!!

I agree totally. While the bay appeared mostly frozen over, I saw enough open water in other spots to make one wonder how thin the line btw safe and unsafe was. And then there was the cold and wind ... yup we mushers got lucky this year.

AT 3:00 PM on Sunday, 2/19/06, the ABCCC bed race team was at the bandstand to take on all comers, but no one showed up. ABCCC is, therefore, declared the 2006 winner for the fourth consecutive year.

She'd say something like "where's the bee ... aahhh ... trophy ?" So got a trophy for this year do they ? I thought not. It can't be official without a trophy I say. I think the ABCCC got off lucky this year, cancellation and all. The WFF mushers are busy even as I type, preparing for next year's race with 16 oz curls and/or a nice cup of hot cocoa (with little marshmellows on top). The terrors of the ice they call us and for good reason. I say the ABCCC should be afraid, be very afraid ! ;)

ABCCC as a long time Sox fan I have learned to say "Wait until next year!"
Clara Bell, from Howdy Dooty? He didn't say anything just honked and later became Captain Kangaroo, or so my mother tells me.:rolleye2:

Who is this ABCCC bunch anyway?

ABCCC = Alton Bay Christian Conference Center = Winners of the 2003-2005 Bed Race.

JacksonB - You are a trouble maker!!! It's a good thing that the Alton Bay Webcam is not yet installed. Then we would have proof that it was the Winni Forum Flyers who actually showed up and crossed that finish line first. Please warn your 'brethren' that we are just waiting for next year to crush the defenders and march to victory!!

PS - Let me contact Kellie Troendle of Alton Parks and Recreation to confirm JacksonB's claim!

As a member of Alton Parks & Rec commission, I can attest to the fact there was no one at the bandstand at 3PM on Feb 19th. At least no one who could "declare" a winner....;) .

Of course, if ABCCC wants to claim victory in a race that had no other contestants, it could also be said that they came in last as no one finished behind them!:D

And ghfromaltonbay thanks alot...I had to move six boxes, unpack two others before I found the good book. And you're right: 'Nuf said!!:rolleye2:
