An article in tonight's (12/21) Laconia Citizen reports that the Wilds of New Hampshire received a permit for piers into Page Pond on Meredith Neck. Many will recall that this organization had grandiose and scary (to many of us) plans to develop a large, year round camp and conference center on Meredith Neck. We attended a DES hearing last year (I think Jan 2004) at Interlakes HS at which it was revealed that the camp had plans for water sourcing and septic/leach field that were just wrong and would severely damage the entire water table of Meredith Neck and possibly threaten Lake Winnipesauke. Traffic issues are a serious problem, too.
This issue has been quiet for almost two years and it appears that what happened is that the Wilds lawyers went low-key because of the strong public opposition, and somehow in the background they received some permitting.
No one is against God, religious camps, or clean wholesome living. But many oppose development in a place like this with sensitive wetland areas and areas that are so close to Lake Winnipesauke that pollution problems are inevitable.
My opinion, after seeing their plans two years ago is that it is seriously wrong development in a seriously wrong place. I thought that they had decided to abandon the project after such strong public opposition in the 2004 public hearings, but obviously they have not.
We need to stop this-- it will harm all of us. The Meredith Preservation Association had hired a very good lawyer and had exerted so much pressure on the Wilds that I thought that the Wilds had given up, but obviously the Wilds outlasted and/or outmaneuvered the MPA.
Here is what I would like to know:
1. Is the MPA still effectively opposing Wilds?
2. Does any one else care about this?
3. Any suggestions on how to help the MPA or otherwise what to do to oppose this?
4. What happened to the MPA web site? It was www.MeredithMPA.com
