Is this a red fox? The tail says YES but the body, I think, is unusually tall.

I have had a red fox in my yard for a year now and I agree those legs are awfully long compare to the one in my yard

In my unprofessional opinion I think that it is a coyote.

Part of being a fox is long legs and a nice tail (LOL)

Would say coyote.
Gray fox?
Emaciated coyote with a really busy tail?
Coyote/gray fox hybrid?
We at least know that it's not a mountain lion.
I’d say definitely a Fox.

Is it possible it is some sort of mixed breed? Fox and coyote?

I thought fox…but after looking at photos on the internet, it really looks more coyote. I didn’t realize that coyotes do have such fox-like heads.

At first I thought coyote...Then I read this and now I don't know. Black ears. Black lower legs? Not sure. I still think coyote because of the length of it's legs.

After some further inspection and reference to info. provided in the link my ruling is:
It is a very dirty red fox.
1) ears are black
2) lower legs are black
3) tail is long and bushy
4) tail has a white tip which is less obvious due to mud on it
5) torso fur is matted down from being wet or muddy
6) it has long legs

Foxes and coyotes can't cross because they have a very different number of chromosomes. Interesting article explains this:

Fox. Leg color and tail are the giveaways. Their undercoats are primarily gray, so sometimes when they shed a lot, they'll be in a gray phase. Probably looks skinny because it shed much of the top coat. They are also very prone to mange, which is apparently quite painful, and can result in them going "bald" -- not a pretty sight.

Lots of great examples of red foxes in a gray phase in this Tuftonboro trail cam video -- as well as a guest appearance by a coyote at ~3:20 -- you can see the difference in the coyote tail.
