Has anyone seen a boat on the lake with one or more of these yet?
I saw a picture the other day of a boat with 5 of these on the back.

Doing a quick google search, the new Mercury Verado, V-12 outboard with 600-hp weighs 1260-lbs and costs about $77,000.

You are so totally better off going to Walmart and buying a 12' Ozark Trail fishing kayak with the big comfy seat for about $369 if you can find one, right now, plus it includes a kayak paddle. This weighs 78-lbs and has a carry capacity of 500-lbs according to the spec sheet which seems very high for a wide 12' kayak. Is probably not very available at this time like it was back in March and April, 2020.

You're best opportunity to see one of those on Winnipesaukee is probably on the back of a (big) Boston Whaler.

Let me know what size/brand of boat you saw with five of them. Have heard of four of them on the back of a 50 foot Formula. That must be one big ass boat with five of them. Those puppies are 1300 +/- pounds each.

Funny how in recent years outboards have made a comeback. Before that it just wasn't "in style" to have an outboard. Remember?

I saw these on Marco Island in February. I actually turned around to get a second look because I thought I had read it wrong.

These outboards have a fixed powerhead and articulating lower unit. The main portion of the motor does not move for steering, only the very bottom. They are priced at about $77,000 each.

By moving the power to a bracket off the aft, the boats are picking up significant inside space that was previously dedicated to engines. This may be what is driving the new trend.

The new Formula 500SSC has 4 of them. Because of the articulating lower units these engines can be installed 4" apart.

Winnisquam Marine will have a 28 foot Bennington with the 600 HP 12 cylinder Mercury outboard on display at the NH Boat Show. Since the motor carries a price of about $77,000 the boat price should be pretty steep. I would guess somewhere in the $300,000 range.

It will be interesting to see how many of them end up on the lake.

Last year Power & Motoryacht magazine had an informative story about the motor:

With a used $400, Craigslist 14' vee-hull aluminum boat and a reliable tiller handle, 15-hp outboard you can go anywhere, including the shallow rocky areas on 22-mile long, Lake Winnipesaukee. Two 60-lb bags of sand placed way up front in the bow for dead weight will level it out for much improved P-E-R-F-O-M-A-N-C-E. .... :D

And, don't forget your pfd w/ a whistle attached! ... ;)

For improved P-E-R-F-O-R-M-A-N-C-E you want to get a 30" tiller handle extension so's you can stand up a little bit further forward in the boat and use your legs like a shock absorber!

Don't understand the reason for such a high price.
You can buy a turn key 540 Stoker crate engine with 650 HP for Chevrolet for $15,895

I read a little about this 600 HP Merc and one thing that sets it apart from (l guess) the rest of the Verado outboards is that the engine, once mounted, is stationary and the drive train (lower unit) moves. This design allows multi-engine installation to be closer together and not have to be concerned with the engine moving.

If Mercury outboards are soooo goood, then how come the U.S. Coast Guard chooses to hit the water with Honda outboards?

In one word, Honda has r-e-l-i-a-b-i-l-i-t-y.

Do a google search for "Why does the Coast Guard use Honda outboards?"

So that makes it just under $200,000 for the 28 Ft. Bennington without a motor and the balance is the motor. Gee, that seems like a bargain!

Apples to oranges.
And 5 of those 600s weigh less (and take up much less space) than any reliable equivalent inboard or stern drive.

Anything 1500 HP and up and it becomes hard to argue against outboards.

Maybe the $270K includes a trailer and a canvas cover? I bet it includes a nice truck/towing package.

That awesome crate motor would really be limited to a stern drive application. The target market for these outboards is big, salt water boats. You rarely see intact stern drives in salt water and if someone wanted 650 reliable horsepower on an inboard setup they would be looking at diesel power for longevity.
