Watching WCVB news this morning they reported that 12000 new boat registrations have been filed in the lakes region alone. Can that be true, 12000 just in the lakes region?

Although there have been a ton of Jet Ski's sold this past year.

Saturday at the Weirs looked like the 4th as well, which leads me to think its going to be a very busy summer in NH

Memorial Day weekend was dead - freezing cold, so i get it. Last weekend was like the middle of summer.

There are vessels coming from everywhere—new sales, those that have been sitting around being sold because of the increased demand, those that haven't been used but will now be as a result of life resuming, etc.

I've noticed that many of the machines I've seen sitting in people's yards are starting to get cleaned up or disappear.

A few things about that number you have to figure out the following:

What is the reporter considering the "Lakes Region"...
and
What defines a "new" registration.... You may find people like me, that didn't register one of the boats last year, are counted in that number because it is "new" from last year......

Bottom line, the press takes lots of freedoms... you have to understand the data set before drawing any conclussions......

Lots of boats where sold last year, no doubt about that.... But the inventory is pretty dry, so I don't think there are a lot of "new" sales going on right now....

I saw the same story on MUR. The "12,000 new registrations" figure came from the guy who runs the Winnipesaukee Pier at the Weirs.

Attached is a slide from Captain Dunleavy. This is from his Boating 101 presentation he recently presented as part of the NH Lakes series.

Slide 66 attached shows there were 101K registrations in 2020. Up from 96K in 2019.

Their were 30K people that took the online boating course and received their Safety Certificate in 2020.

For reference - There were a total of 7K students that took the Safety course in 2019.

This does not confirm that the 12,000 new registrations is accurate, but it does indicate there is a spike in people looking to boat in NH.

Took the family on a 5 hour cruise yesterday from Wolfeboro to Wiers under the Gov's Island bridge then to Meredith Town Docks. We then went around Bear Is under the Long Island Bridge and back to Wolfeboro.

I can report that it was very busy. Like a busy Summer weekend. Not quite as bad as the 4th. Definitely some rookie navigators out there. Gave me the opportunity to teach my kids some things to look out for.

All I noticed was the noise, noise, noise. I think we are on for a loud and very busy summer. Some prefer it that way and some no so much.

We all know how this ends don't we? We just don't know when or why.
