We live on the Cape and boat and fish several times a season in Chatham and other nearby waters inhabited by Great Whites. Fear of sharks has never prevented us from enjoying the Cape.

The possibility of someone getting injured or killed by a shark is still very, very small. Unfortunately, the lake also has it's share of water-related fatalities as well.

Media-driven hype about sharks will always be with us.

Not to mention there is a wide range on the definition of "recovered or survived" COVID and we have no idea on some of the long term effects yet to those who "recovered".

Think of something like chicken pox and 50 years later you get shingles from it.

Many "Survivors" now have chronic conditions and acceleration of other diseases, especially respiratory ones.

If my sister in law survives, she will be crippled for life. Currently paralyzed from the neck down on a ventilator for weeks, with weeks to go. She is in her 50's.

The Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File investigated 129 alleged shark-human interactions worldwide in 2020. ISAF confirmed 57 unprovoked shark bites on humans and 39 provoked bites.

Global total of unprovoked shark bites significantly lower than average
The 2020 worldwide total of 57 confirmed unprovoked cases was lower than the most recent five-year (2015-2019) average of 80 incidents annually. There were 13 shark related fatalities this year, 10 of which were confirmed to be unprovoked. This number is above the annual global average of four unprovoked fatalities per year.
